DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

On January 1, Feast of the Circumcision, the various Masses at St. Joseph's Cathedral ' and suburban churches of the parish were attended by large congregations. The devotions at the Cathedral in the evening included the Holy Rosary and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. There was Exposition of. the Blessed Sacrament at St. Joseph's Cathedral from the 11 o'clock Mass on Sunday. His Lordship the Bishop officiated at Compline in the evening, and, at the conclusion of the customary procession pontificated at Solemn Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The annual spiritual retreat of,the diocesan clergy, to be conducted by the Rev. Richard Murphy, S.J., of St. Ignatius' College, Riverview, Sydney, will (Commence at Holv Cross College, Mosgiel, on Monday, January 24. 'Rev. W. J. Buckley, S.M'., of St. • Patrick's'College, Wellington, and Rev. K. McGrath, S.M'., Greymouth, are among visitors to Dunedin. Father Buckley preached an impressive discourse at St. Joseph's Cathedral on Sunday evening. Rev. Brother Bowler, principal of the Christian Brothers' School, Dunedin. was a passenger on the 30th ult. by the Manuka from Wellington to Sydney en route io Melbourne, on a well-earned holiday. On Christmas Day eleven, boys received their first Holy Communion in the Chapel of the Boys' Home. Mount St Joseph, Waverley, at the Mass celebrated by Rev. Father Graham. The acts of preparation and thanksgiving were recited aloud by the first Communicants, who also sang several hymns very devotionally. THE LATE MR. JOHN" COFFEY. Solemn Requiem Mass was offered at St. Joseph's Cathedral, commencing at 9 a.m., on Tuesday for the repose of the soul of the late John Coffey, father of the Very Rev. J. Coffey, Acini., and of the Rev. Mother M. Margaret and Sister M. Austin. 0.5. D., of this diocese. His Lordship the Bishop presided. Rev. Father Foley (Oamaru) was celebrant,. Rev. Father Delany (South Dunedin) deacon, Rev. James Lynch (Wreys Bush) subdeacon, and Rev. Father Ardagh master of ceremonies. Among the clergy present were the Very Rev. Fathers Coffey, Adm., and J. O'Neill (Waikiwi), Rev. Fathers I). O'Neill (Roxburgh), John Lynch Lawrence), O'Reilly (Fort Chalmers), Graham and Rooney (South Dunedin), Kaveney (Cathedral). Andersen (Holy Cross College, Mosgiel), K. McGrath, S.M. (Greymouth), and J. -Kelly, Ph.D. The impressive incidental music' was sung by the Dominican Nuns' choir, assisted by the Very Rev. 'J. O'Neill, Rev. Fathers O'Reilly, Kaveney, and Andersen. Monday, December 27, was a galatday for the children of St. Vincent de Paul's Orphanage for girls (South Dunedin) and St. Joseph's Orphanage for boys (Waverley), who assembled in their full numbers in the grounds."! of the former institution to participate in the good things provided by the ladies of St. Joseph's Cathedral Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul" Society, who were most generously helped by. the pupils of the* Dominican. Nuns of St. Dominio's College. A huge Christmas tree, erected in the grounds, was the centre of attraction, and this was so heavily laden that each child, was the haopy recipient of several much-cherished., gifts, from a real live-" Santa Clans." This role was admirably filled by Mr. T. Heffernan, who was aided in the all-important duties of dispensing his benefactions by two willing little assistants—Misses M. Hussey and M.
