MAR IST BROTHERS’ SCHOOL, AUCKLAND

Last Saturday (writes our Auckland correspondent, under date November 5) the annual banquet to the Vermont Street School footballers was held in the school hall. There were present the “A,” “B,” and lightweight teams and many friends of the school. The musical programme was contributed to by Master Gilman (who had to respond three times to emphatic encores for his brilliant flute solos), Messrs. E. Owens, O’Flanagan, , and Wells, Miss M. Prendergast playing the accompaniments. Rev. Brother Calixtus, who presided, . welcomed the visitors, amongst whom were Mr. A. Wetherilt (president Auckland Referees’ Association), Mr. G. Katterns, and Mr. Moore (A.R.A.), Mr. M. O’Connor (M. 8.0.8.), Messrs. Gourley, D. Flynn, R. Webster, E. Owens, C. Hurley, and R. Owens (president St. Benedict's Club. The dominant note of the speakers throughout was one of congratulation, on the phenomenal performance of the “A” team, who averaged 63 to nil in all their matches, and to the lightweights for their win in that grade. The splendid behaviour of the boys on and off the field was most noticeable The “A” team presented a framed photograph of the players to Messrs. D. Flynn and M. Gourley, as a mark of appreciation for the keen interest these two supporters have always shown in the boys. The proceedings closed with three cheers for the -Misses Hickey and their assistants for the help so willingly and capably given each year by attending to the requirements of the gathering. Throe gold medals presented by St. Benedict’s Club were won by J. Gourley, S. Lack, and F. Goughian. The gold medal presented by the Brothers was won by R. Darby; the two medals for the forwards (presented by J. Smith of G. Courts) by P. O’Neill and V. Viscovich, and two gold medals presented to the lightweights by Mr. Hurley were won by J. Williams and L. McCaffrey; Master C. Hurley getting a cap.
