DIOCESE OF CHRISTCHURCH

(From our own correspondent.) November. 15. The Coin Evening, held at the Catholic Girls’ Hostel on Wednesday evening, was well attended and remunerative. Proceedings opened with a concert programme, songs being contributed by Misses Elsie Ives, B. Berry, K. Lockhart, C. Darragh, E. Rodgers, and Mr. R. McAleer. Misses E. Ives and V. Wilson played the accompaniments. A dainty supper was served, followed by a social. Rev. Father O’Boyle, writing from Knocknagoshil, Ireland, where he is curate, expresses his great admiration at the wonderful attachment of the Irish people to their religion in these distressful times. The work of the priests is attended with the greatest consolation, as evidenced by the assistance at daily Mass, and frequent reception of the Sacraments. Very Rev. Dean Hyland, after an extended tour of the United States, has reached London prior to visiting Ireland. -He was very well at the time of writing, having made a complete recovery from his illness. The Dean is enthusiastic in his remarks about the flourishing state of the Church in America. At Darfield, on Sunday, November 7, the annual dinner, under the auspices of the Hibernian Society, was given. The number of visiting Hibernians was more than usually large, and included 30 from the Christchurch branches and representatives from New Headford, all of whom attended in regalia the nine o’clock Mass. The dinner in the schoolroom, which was largely attended by parishioners, was presided over by Bro. F. J. Narbey, president of the Darfield branch, and Rev. Father J. Hanrahan. The customary toast

list was duly honored. . Bro. J. M. Coffey brought under consideration the St, Patrick’s Sports’ Association, Christchurch, and urged support for the forthcoming meeting. Besides the enlisting of 20 members in the association’s ranks, two gold cups were immediately promised— one each from the New Headford and Darfield branches. Bro. T. P .O’Rourke (P.P.,. St. Patrick’s branch No. 82), thanked the donors for their very generous and sportsmanlike action. Bros. J. Cuneen and F. J. Narbey on behalf of the New ITeadford and Darfield; branches, respectively. Rev. Father Hanrahan expressed his great pleasure at seeing l such a fine gathering at so successful and enjoyable a function. The visitors were delighted at the hospitality extended to them by the Darfield branch, and were all agreed that the function was one of the best conducted and most enjoyable they had had the pleasure of attending.
