DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND

(From our own correspondent.) October 8. The mission in Onehunga, conducted by the Redemptorists Fathers Mangan and Haunigan, was concluded on Sunday last. In Grey Lynn, the renewal mission given by the same Fathers terminates on next Sunday. Father Hannigan, C.SS.R., begins a two weeks' mission in Parnell on Sunday next. Father Mangan, C.SS.R., is to conduct a fortnight's mission in Coromandel and outlying districts, beginning on October 17. An old and much revered friend of many of the Catholics of Auckland arrived by the Niagara" Rev. Brother George, Superior of the Marist College, New Norcia, West Australia. Brother George was one of the representatives of the Marist Order in Australia, at the recent chapter held in Italy. After the conclusion of his official work he had the privilege of paying a visit to Irelandthe home of his ancestors. lie was in Dublin in July and August of this year, and hence was able to give a most interesting and illuminating account of recent events in the Old Land. We always felt that we were not obliged to believe everything that we read in the cables. Brother George's first-hand information proves, the wisdom of being sceptical in such matters. One thing is certain: Though British machine-guns and armoured cars have killed many defenceless women and children they have not been able to murder Irish humor. Here is one instance out of many : It was announced that General Lucas would be exhibited at a bazaar in Mullingar. At the news, British motor lorries and armored cars, carrying brave khaki boys tore through the midlands to the relief of the Brigadier. Of

course it was a huge joke. General Lucas was not there, but general gun was. .Brother George's forecast .of the future, was most optimistic. He said:"Sinn Fein is no sensational movement, .it claims and enjoys the allegiance and support of the Irish people. It must triumph. May God grant it." Many old friends amongst clergy arid laity • were delighted to .see Brother George and they, all wish him the success that is due to his great talent and sterling, character. Messrs Beg. Owens and Thomas Lillis, both prominent members of St. Benedict's Club, are at present patients in the Mater Hospital, and are progressing well. . . The Devotion of the Forty Hours' Adoration was commenced in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Ponsonby, last Sunday. Father Doyle, of Remuera, was-the preacher for the occasion. A sacred recital will be given in St. Patrick's Cathedral on Sunday, October 31, under the able conductorship of Mr. Leo J. Whittaker, assisted by Mr. G. I. Allen at the organ. An excellent programme is assured. Very Rev. Father Forde, Adm., has established the Sodality of the Sacred Heart in St. Patrick's and already a large number of members are enrolled, and new members are still coming in. This sodality will meet on the first Thursday of every month, on which occasions special addresses will be delivered. News has been received from Mr. Frank Kenny, who was here as agent for Allen Doone, that he is bringing to New Zealand Denis Kehoe, a great Irish comedian, whoso performances in Australia, have been well reported in the press, and who has done excellent business. A very successful fancy fair and wonderland was held on October 4,5, and 6, in O'Neill Street Hall, Ponsonby. There were entertainments and side-shows of all descriptions, and fun for old and young. The proceeds were in aid of the Ponsonby West Queen candidate. A harbor excursion has been arranged for Wednesday, October 27, and a good attractive musical programme prepared in connection therewith. The proceeds are intended to assist in the election of St. Patrick's Queen candidate. A final sale of work is to be held in St. Patrick's School on October 16, when all articles on hand will be disposed of at reduced rates, so as to procure a new fetock for the bazaar. A fancy fair and garden fete, in aid of the convent, Otahuhu, will be held in the Catholic Church grounds, Otahuhu, on Saturday, October 23. There will be pleasures for young and old in the way of variety sales, races, weight-guessing competitions, tug-of-war, dancing competitions, refreshments, bran-tub surprise packets, and sports, which will include skipping and racing competitions, tennis and boxing exhibitions, and seven-a-side football match by Vermont Street School's champions. Valuable prizes will be given to winners. - — __, Onehunga (From our own correspondent.^ October 10. A very successful two weeks' mission was conducted by the Redemptorist Fathers Mangan and Hannigan, at the Church of the Assumption, Onehunga.
