THE LATE CARDINAL AMETTE.

A cable message dated August 29, announces the sudden death of Cardinal Amette, Archbishop of Paris. lhe distinguished prelate was 70 years of age Leo Adolphus Amette was born at Domville, on September b, 1850, and studied at the Petit Seminaire at Evreux and at the Grand Seminaire of St. Sulpice. After his ordination, on December 20, 1873, he filled the post of secretary to the Bishop of Evreux. He was later stationed as Canon, and then became VicarGeneral of Evreux. On November 28, 1898, he became Bishop of Bayeux, and on February 21, 1906 was made Archbishop of Sidon, and 'Coadjutor of Cardinal Richard, Archbishop,, of Paris. *His. succession to the Parisian See took place on January 28, 1908. The deceased prelate's career passed through some eventful periods of French history. In the first place, his early theological studies were interrupted by the war of 1870, and then by the insurrection of the Paris Commune. The Cardinal played an important part in healing the spiritual wounds of his native country stricken by atheism and anticlericalism, and was a strenuous worker for the re-establish-ment of the Church in France. During the late war too, his patriotism and religious zeal were great sources of inspiration and consolation to the Catholics of ranee.
