DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND

(Prom our own correspondent.)

: August 27. His Lordship Bishop Cleary returned from Well; ington yesterday. Rev. Father Herbert, S.M., is at present conducting missions in the Northern Wairoa districts. Rev. Father Brady, of Gisborne, is at present in the Mater Hospital, where he has undergone a slight operation. Rev. Father Edge is still in the Mater Hospital, and we are pleased to hear that his health continues to improve. The “coin evening” held in Miss O’Connor’s (the &t. Patrick queen candidate) home, Remuera, on Tuesday, August 24, proved very enjoyable and successful. Missions will be conducted by the Redemptorist Fatheis in Onehunga parish in September, concluding on October 3 : then a renewal mission in Grey Lynn, and a series of missions in the Coromandel district. The gift evening held at the Central Hall, Albert Street, on Saturday, 21st, in aid of St. Patrick’s queen candidate, was a great success, and the musical programme arranged by Mr. Whitty was very much appreciated. 1 A euchre party and social will be held in St. Benedict’s Hall on Thursday, September 9, and the proceeds are to be handed to the Marist Brothers, Vermont Street. We hope to see the hall packed to the doors. n ,I’ a<dier Murphy, S.M., of San Francisco, who travelled by the Niagara, was the guest of Father Forde Adm. at the Cathedral Presbytery during the past few days Father Murphy, who is a native of Armagh Ireland, made an extensive tour of Australia, New Zealand, and the Islands during his holiday Memorials to war veterans buried in the Catholic cemeteries at Howick and Paninure will be unveiled on Sunday afternoon, August 29. Sir Frederick Laim, Speaker of the House of Representatives, will perform the ceremony at Howick at 12 o’clock; and Right Rev. Dr. Cleary, Bishop of Auckland, and Mr. Ed Fitzpatrick will also speak. Bishop Cleary will unveil the memorial, at Panmure at 3 o’clock. There are 126 veterans interred in the two cemeteries. It is with sincere regret I have to chronicle the news of the serious illness of Sister Laurencia, Provincial of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart. For some time past the Sister has been in indifferent Health, and two weeks ago pneumonia set in, and her condition is now very critical. However, her medical advisers, Drs. Masked and Bull, still entertain some hope of recovery. Her many friends in the Dominion, especially in St. Benedict’s parish, where she now resides, and Grey Lynn, where she was superioress of the convent for close on 25 years, express their deepest sympathy with the Sisters, and earnestly pray for the speedy recovery of their most zealous and devoted Provincial. In connection with the Queen Carnival all six parishes are busily engaged in organising various functions. In Grey Lynn Miss Ivy Priest’s team have arranged for a picture show in the Empress Theatre on August 31; a card party in the school on September 2; a jumble sale of work and party in the schoolHa on on September 11; a social “ the Richmond Ha 1 on September 14 and a social in the Druids’ Hall on September . 21.
