DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND

(From our own correspondent.) July 9. Rev. Father Cashman, late of Wellington archdiocese) left Auckland to-day by the Maheno for Sydney, en route to Ireland. , Rev. Father Bernard Kreymborg, of Whangarei, left Wellington by the lonic on Wednesday, July 7, on a twelve months’ visit to Europe. The meeting of the Reception Committee formed to accord the Right Rev. Dr Liston, Coadjustor Bishop, a fitting welcome on his arrival in Auckland, was held in the Cathedral Presbytery, on July 5. The Right Rev. Mgr. Mahoney, V.G., presided, and all iJie clergy of the city and suburban parishes were present, also two, representatives of the laity from each parish. Mr. J. T. Fitzgerald was appointed secretary. A letter was read from Bishop Cleary apologising for his absence, in which His » a

Lordship referred in most eulogistic terms of the coadjutor, and bespoke-for- him a most enthusiastic reception from clergy and laity. .. V. ' The three weeks’ mission conducted by the Marist Fathers in the . St. Benedict’s Parish was brought to a close on Sunday, July 4. The missioners will shortly conduct missions in Waiuku and Dargaville parishes. A very successful and enjoyable “At Home” was held in the Kiosk, Point Erin Park, Ponsonby, by the committee of Miss Kiely, one of the Ponsonby candidates in the forth-coming queen carnival. The novelty of the surroundings, and the glorious moonlight night helped towards akin the “At Home” the success that it was. The hall decorations were carried out in the candidate’s —purple and goldwhile the supper tables, laid out on the spacious verandah, were tastefully decorated with purple and gold flowers, and streamers of the same colors. The chaperones were Mesdames Airey, Adams, Clarke, Casey, Ferguson, Kiely, Snedden, and Rowlands. The committee consisted of Mrs. Ross, Misses E. Kiely, J. McGee, and D. Suedden, Messrs. D. Ferguson, B. Kiely, and K. A. Snedden, with Miss A. O’Brien (secretary) and Mr. F. J. Lowry (treasurer).

Rev. Father O’Flynn and his parishioners have arranged a bazaar and queen carnival to bo held in Te Kuiti Hall, during the first week in December. A series of socials is to be held, the first of which took place on June 14, and was a great success.

On June 25 the Marist Brothers footballers had a day out; not one defeat being registered against them, the results being:—Seniors (6), Grafton (5); Juniors (6), College Rifles (5); 4ths (36), Ponsonby (0); sths (22), Parnell (0) • Vermont Street A (62). Richmond Road (0); Vermont Street B (11), Bayfield B (0), Vermont Lightweights (38), Richmond Road (0). The seniors, juniors, 4th s, and sths are all high up in the list for championship honors. The schools have nlaved 2 rounds: Vermont Street A. beat Point Chevalier by 46 to 0, and Vermont Street A. beat Richmond Road bv 62 to 0. This team is heavy and very fast, and already has developed fine combination. Vermont Street B. beat Bayfield B. (11-0), Lightweight beat Newton "West (12-0), Lightweights beat Richmond Road (38-0). A good team with many promising players. Great disappointment 'has been expressed here over Singe’s nonselection in the North Island and N. Z. teams. Admitted to be one of the greatest of New Zealand’s forwards who played for the King’s Cup, and showing wonderful form this season, it is hard to account for his exclusion. Perhaps the same reason might account for the non-selection of several brilliant players from the great Christchurch Marist combination. Singe played for Auckland against Thames on Saturday. July 3rd and was the best forward on the ground. On last Saturday Vermont Street A. beat Nelson bv 38 to 0 after a game in which Nelson Street never let down. Vermont Lightweights beat Napier Street bv 2 to 0.
