ST. PATRICK’S COLLEGE, WELLINGTON

The annual prize-giving in connection with St. Patrick’s College, prior to the Christmas vacation, was held on Tuesday afternoon, December 9, in the college study hall. There was a large attendance of parents and friends. Among those present were his Grace Archbishop Redwood, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), Rev. Father Gilbert (rector of the college), and a number of the clergy of Wellington. The Rev. . Father Gilbert, in welcoming Archbishop Redwood, spoke of the pleasure it gave all present to see his Grace back safely in New Zealand from his trip to Australia. Father Gilbert remarked on the modesty of the proceedings of the afternoon, incidentally mentioning the loss the college had sustained by the death of several prominent men connected with the institution for many years. The year had been a very successful one from every point of view, the school roll being the largest since the college opened. The boys had been most tractable, and the results of the various examinations had been very satisfactory. Not only in studies had the boys been prominent, but in the field of sport they had ably upheld the honor of St. Patrick’s, so well earned in former years. They had won the special shield given for the Cadet Rugby tournament. Father Gilbert was pleased to say that the Catholics of New Zealand were awakening to the fact that their secondary schools required support as much as did their primary schools, and an almost remarkable display of enthusiasm had been shown in the past year by the Catholics of the Dominion. The supporters of the Catholic education system recognised that a child’s soul as well as his body required educating, and for that reason schools such as St. Patrick’s College had been erected. ' Other bodies were emulating the Catholics, and one could see colleges being erected in Wellington, and in practically every other town in New Zealand. Such a policy, followed by other denominations, who had watched the Catholic system closely for 30 or 40 years, practically sounded the death-knell of the present system of education. His Grace Archbishop Redwood voiced his pleasure at being present at the prize-giving, being, as he was, the founder of the college. He made reference to the work in connection with the Irish* Race Convention at Melbourne, and hoped that some good would come as a result. He was pleased to hear of so successful a year, and hoped that the spirit being maintained in the college at the present time would be the spirit shown for, many years. The work of the rector was showing itself in the keenness of the boys for their work, and in the excellent results obtained. Prior to the distribution of prizes, items were given by the Glee Club, Rev. Father Ryan, W. D’Ath, and L. Wilson.
