Napier

(From our own correspondent.) November 2. The mission at present being conducted by Fathers McCarthy and O'Leary, Marist Missioners, is being very well attended. The number of communicants every morning this week has been between four and five hundred, while the evening devotions are attended by crowded congregations. The mission will be brought to a close next week with the Forty Hours' Adoration. At the Trades and Labor Union Sports, held at Farndon on Labor Day, the boys of the Marisk Brothers' School secured Ist, 2nd, and 3rd places in the 11.8. primary schools' championship for juniors, and also for seniors, over a distance of 220yds. They also won the 75yds, the Siamese race, and 100yds under 18 years. This year has been a record one for the school, the championships in swimming, "best boy," life-saving, and the football championship, also the first prize in essay competition open to Napier primary schools, all being won by boys of our school under the control of the Marist Brothers. To show their appreciation of the success of the boys and the teaching of the good Brothers, the old boys entertained the school football team, the prize-winners and the Brothers in charge to a social evening in Abbott's Hall, when the prizes were presented, and speeches made congratulating both teachers and pupils on their numerous successes. The efforts of the Catholic ladies of Napier to raise funds for the sick and wounded soldiers were crowned with success on Saturday last, when they took charge of the Red Cross shop and raised the handsome sum of £230. This sum has only been exceeded on one previous occasion, and the ladies deserve to be heartily congratulated on their notable achievement. This letter arrived too late for our last week's issue.—Ed.
