DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND

(From our own correspondent.) November 1. Father J. T. Taylor, of Waiuku, left on Monday evening last for camp, to take up chaplaincy duty with the Forces. Father M. D. Bleakley, late of St. Benedict's, and now attached to a hospital ship as chaplain, arrived back in Auckland this week. Mr. P. E. Dromgool, M.A.. LL.M., erstwhile diocesan secretary of the Auckland Diocesan Council of the N.Z.C.F., and until quite recently a valuable member of the Auckland Diocesan Executive of the same body, who has temporarily taken up his residence in Wellington, has been appointed to represent the Auckland Diocesan Council on the newly-constituted Dominion Executive of the Federation. The many friends of Mr. J. B. Bonner, one of our most prominent Catholic young men, will regret to learn that he has been laid up for some six or seven weeks with a serious illness. Although not yet able to leave his room, it is gratifying to learn that he is on the road to recovery, and the hope is expressed that he will soon be restored to the full vigor of health and strength. Mr. Bonner is a member of the Auckland Diocesan Executive of the Catholic Federation, treasurer of the Auckland Catholic Women's Hostel,' and secretary of the Devon port branch of the Federation. The second annual meeting of the Catholic Women's Hostel Board was held on Sunday afternoon last in St. Benedict's Hall. The Right 'Rev. Mgr. Gillan, V.G., presided. The report of the Board of Management disclosed a very satisfactory condition of affairs. It was shown that the volume of business transacted during the past year had increased to nearly three times the amount done in the previous year, tending to prove the necessity for such an institution in the city. The board also reported that all outstanding accounts had been liquidated, and generally the hostel was in a sound position at the end of the second year of its existence. Appreciation was expressed in the report of the good work done by the ladies' committee in connection with the bazaar held during the year, which enabled the board to liquidate all the initial expenses in furnishings, etc. The election of the Board of Management resulted in the re-election of the members of the board who held office in the past year, with the exception of the chairman (Mr. F. G. J. Temm), who was unable to accept the position for a further term. On the motion of Dean Cahill, the meeting passed a resolution of thanks and appreciation of the services of Mr. Temm during the first two years of the hostel's existence, Mr. J. T. Fitzgerald was elected chairman of the board, vice Mr. Temm. A motion of regret was recorded at ' the serious illness of the trea-

surer (Mr. J. B. Bonner), and the hope was expressed that he would soon be restored to perfect health. A hearty vote of thanks to Right Rev. Mgr. Gillan for presiding brought the meeting to a close.
