DIOCESE OF CHRISTCHURCH

(From our own correspondent.) October 14. bather Mangan, C.SS.R., who is to conduct a retreat for the members of the archconfraternity of the Blessed Sacrament, preached in the Cathedral on last Sunday evening. Father Murphy, Chaplain with the Forces, writing from France, says he is well, and has been meeting quite a large number of Christchurch boys. A social in aid of the Woolston Choir funds was held in the local Oddfellows’ Flail on Thursday evening last, and proved most enjoyable. The hall was crowded, and during an interval Rev. Dr. Kennedy, Adm,, presented Mr. Lanyon (conductor) and Mrs. Foley (organist) with useful gifts as a mark of the parishioners’ appreciation of their services. On Friday afternoon the Marist Brothers’ School football team, who won in the primary schools competition, were entertained at the Linwood School by the headmaster, Mr. Evans (chairman of the Rugby Union). Before the presentation of the senior trophy won by the boys in the recent competitions, the chairman, in appropriate terms, urged the boys always to play the game in the same friendly and sportsmanlike spirit as it had been played this year. It was a coincidence (he said) that on the last occasion when a similar function was held in that school the same two teams (Marist senior and Riccarton junior) were those entitled to the two shields. Addressing the Marist boys he urged them to stick to the old Rugby game, and try to excel in it until at some future date they, like so many of the Marist Brothers’ Old Boys, would have the coveted hppor of playing for their province

in representative games. Rev. Brother Palladium (Director) replied on behalf of the Marist team. On Thursday evening last the Marist Brothers, in conjunction with Mr. Dickson, of the Carlton Cafe, entertained the successful football teams of the Marist Brothers’ School. The boys have won the senior shield, also three seven-a-side honors. The fifth grade (boys under 16) too won their competition, although no recognition is made of this grade by the Rugby Union. The menu prepared by Mr. Dickson was everything to be desired. Father Fogarty congratulated the boys on their successes, and gave them sound advice on the necessity of being loyal to their colors even after their school days. Rev. Brother Phelan (coach) summarised the teams’ play during the season, and said he trusted that the boys would follow Father Fogarty’s advice and play for their own club. It was regrettable to find that the strongest players in opposing teams have been men who really should have been wearing the green jersey. Brother Phelan reminded the boys of what they owed to their many friends, including Mesdames Green, -Blackaby, Maher, and Burns, and Messrs. Dickson, Payne, Cotter, and Kelleher. During the evening a musical programme was contributed to by Messrs. Phil Jones, Dickson, M. Mannix, Masters Campbell, Upjohn, and Pawson, Miss Healy playing the accompaniments. Mr. Dickson expressed appreciation of the work being done in the Marist Brothers’ School, and said he trusted to have the pleasure of entertaining the boys on many future occasions. The annual social reunion of the members of the Celtic Club and their friends was held in the Hibernian Hall on last Wednesday evening, and proved a very enjoyable function. Excellent music was provided by Mrs. Baxter. After devotions at the Cathedral on last Sunday evening week Mr. Allen Doone and the members of his company were entertained by the Christchurch Celtic Club in the Hibernian Hall, Mr. J. Curry presided and there was a numerous attendance of members and friends. Among those present were Rev. Dr. Kennedy, Adm., Fathers Long, Fogarty, and Carroll. A musical programme was contributed to by Misses C. Quinn D. Nottingham S. Greenlees, E. Rodgers, the Marist Brothers’ School Choir, Messrs. W. Brittenden, C. Fottrell, and Phil Jones, Masters J. Pawson and If. Upjohn. Miss K. O’Connor was accompanist. Miss Connie Kyle, Mr. Alien Doone, and Mr. Tom Buckley also contributed much appreciated items on behalf of the Allen Doone Company. Rev. Dr. Kennedy complimented Mr. Doone and his company on the charming plays they produced, tending as they did to keep alive the spirit of Irish sentiments and ideals. Father Fogarty also expressed appreciation on behalf of the Celtic Club. At the supper congratulatory speeches were made bv Father Long, Messrs. Curry, P. J. Smyth, T. P. O’Rourke, and W. Brittenden. Mr. Allen Doone and Miss Edna Keeley replied on behalf of the guests, the former apologising for the absence through illness of Messrs. Cullinane, Kenny, and Reynolds, and assured the Celtic Club that the pleasant evening spent would rank amongst the most happy recollections of the N.Z. tour. “God Save Ireland” and “Auld Lang Sync” were sung in conclusion.
