Ashburton

There was a large attendance at a farewell social recently given under the auspices of the Ashburton Catholic Red Cross Guild to Mrs. W. 11. Lunn, who had been president since the inauguration of the guild nearly two years ago. The meeting-room was tastefully decorated and furnished for the occasion. An enjoyable programme was contributed to by Mesdames Boddington, F. Hanrahan, B. Kissell, Messrs. J. R. Brophy, and M. J. Burgess, and Master Paul Cullen (songs), Misses M. Quigley and D. Cullen (pianoforte solos) ; Misses Devane and Bishop (pianoforte duet) ; and Mr. F. K. Cooper (recitations). Misses E. Cullen and M. Quigley were accompanists. The Very Rev. Dean O'Donnell, on behalf of the guild, in asking Mrs. Lunn's acceptance of a travelling rug, and dress case suitably inscribed, expressed the sincere regret of all at her departure from amongst them. Owing to Mrs. Lunn's tact and influence the good work of the guild had prospered, and although the prominent position she was vacating would be difficult to fill he trusted the work she had so well organised would be continued. (As an earnest of the great esteem in which she was held, and as a memento of the pleasant evenings spent

among the guild members; they had great pleasure id making the presentation. The Very Rev. Dean also referred to the impending departure of Mr. Lunn, local manager of the Union Bank of Australia, who had been promoted to the branch bank at Hastings, and who would be much missed, especially in Ashburton commercial circles. Mr. Lunn returned thanks on behalf of Mrs. Lunn for the handsome presentation made her, and also for the kind words expressed by Dean O'Donnell. He (the speaker) being over, and his sons under, military age, his family considered it their duty to assist in the best capacity offering, hence their interest in Red Cross work. He hoped the Catholic Red Cross Guild would continue its good work, and maintain its reputation of being the very best working guild in Ashburton. In the course of a few brief remarks Mrs. Walsh said that nowhere would Mrs. Lunn's work be better appreciated than in Ashburton. Refreshments were provided, and at the conclusion of a pleasant function "Auld Lang Syne" and the National Anthem were sung. The arrangements reflected great credit on the guild members and their energetic secretary, Miss Mary McCormack.
