Cheviot

A social gathering was held in the Town Hall, Cheviot, on Monday evening, March 18, in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. The hall, which was decorated throughout, was crowded for the occasion notwithstanding the inclement weather prevailing, and the event passed off successfully. The supper, replete with delicacies, was in charge of the ladies' committee, and was much appreciated. At intervals during the evening songs were contributed by Misses C. Coakley, Rodgers, and L. Flaherty, Messrs. D. Haughey and P. Brophy ; recitations by Misses M. Martin and M. Sturgess, and Miss E. Preston gave several step dances in admirable style. The music was supplied by Misses C. Coakley, Saunders, and Mr. Murgatroyd ; extras being played by Mrs. Scott, Miss Brooker, and Messrs. Haughey and Denton. Mr. Scott supervised,' the general arrangements. During the evning Mr. C. Edward thanked those who attended the social, and others who assisted to make the event a success. A beautiful oil painting of a dog was kindly donated to the church funds by Miss C. Coakley as a prize in a guessing competition. This occasioned considerable interest, but none of the contestants guessed the name of the subject of the picture, which was eventually announced as "Wag.." Having failed to find an owner in the guessing competition the painting was put up to auction in aid of the Red Cross funds. Mr. Scott acted as auctioneer, and after spirited bidding it was knocked down to Mr. P. Brophy for £9. The proceeds of the social will liquidate thf? small debt remaining on the "church grounds.
