DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

The Very Rev. Dean Van Dyk, Superior of the Maori Missions in the diocese of Auckland, is at present a visitor to Dunedin. Messrs. Hugh O’Neill (Mosgiel) and Arthur Mcßae (Nelson), of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, have received intimation of having passed the first section of the B.A. degree in Mental Science, Latin, English, and French. On next Sunday (Feast of St. Patrick) all the members of the Hibernian Society are expected u to approach the Holy Table at the 9 o’clock Mass, in : St. Patrick’s Basilica, South Dunedin. It is anticipated that the number of members present on the occasion will, go well towards establishing a record. p

" In continuation of his episcopal visitation of the diocese, his Lordship Bishop Verdon is to arrive at Oamaru on Saturday, preparatory to the observance on Sunday next at St. Patrick’s Basilica of the Feast of the Apostle of Ireland. • The weekly meeting of St. Joseph’s Bed Cross and Patriotic Guild took place on Wednesday, when there was a very good attendance. A large parcel of clothing was finished. Any person having work at home is requested to bring same in as soon as possible. In connection with the garden fete to be held in aid of the South Dunedin Orphanage, country contributors are notified that all goods should reach Dunedin by Wednesday, March 20, and that all cash, in order to count in the queens’ competition, must be in the stall-holders’ hands by Saturday afternoon, March 23. ' At a pleasant social gathering of members of St. Joseph’s Ladies’ Club on Wednesday evening, March 6, ’in St. Joseph’s Hall, a very cordial welcome home was extended to Mr. Cyril Moloney, who lately returned from duty at the front. Songs were given by Misses Withers, Sullivan, and Hawke, and recitations by Mr. Moloney. Miss Hawke was accompanist. Refreshments were served, and the president, Mrs. M. A. Jackson, welcomed the guest of the evening. A final meeting of the promoters of the concert to be given on Monday evening next in His Majesty’s Theatre in celebration of St. Patrick's Day, was held after devotions on Sunday evening. In arranging an excellent programme a successful effort has been made to keep the sentiment of nationality in the forefront, and patrons will be privileged to enjoy an artistic rendering of many gems of Irish son< T and music on the occasion. Apart from being an appropriate social observance of Ireland’s national festival, the object sought to be benefited- —the upkeep of our parochial primary schools—is one that must appeal to the people. Satisfactory returns from the sale of tickets are already in hand, and there is every indication that the theatre will be as crowded on next Monday, evening as on former similar occasions. Addressing the congregation at St. Joseph’s Cathedral at Vespers on last Sunday evening, the Very Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., speaking of the compassion of our Divine Lord for the multitude as narrated in the Gospel of the day, reminded his hearers of their duty to whole-heartedly support the Church s educational and social undertakings. He instanced the ever-present needs of our parochial schools and of our charitable institutions, and especially stressed the claims of the St. Vincent de Paul Orphanage, South Dunedin, which, among others, was sorely feeling the strain consequent on the existing war conditions and the excessive cost of living. He too exhorted our Catholic ladies to more numerously associate themselves with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and other Catholic guilds working in the interests of the deserving poor of the city.
