M. 8.0.8. ASSOCIATION, WELLINGTON

The second annual meeting of ' the association was : held in the Marist Brothers’ School, Newtown, on ' Thursday, January 2,4. Rev. Brother Egbert , (president) presided, and there was a good attendance of members. The chairman stated that it gave him much pleasure to move the adoption of the report and balance sheet, which showed that the association had concluded another successful year and was in a most flourishing condition. He congratulated the members of theexecutive upon the enthusiastic manner in which they had carried out their duties during their term of office, and stated that it was a pity that while the membership was fairly good, the executive’s efforts were not supported by every old boy of the schools having his name placed on the roll. To the members of the football and cricket branches, who had so creditably upheld the association’s honor in the field of sport, the Rev. Brother extended his congratulations. Referring to those members whom it was a sad duty to place in the report under the heading of obituary, the speaker mentioned that each one had shown excellent examples of Catholic manhood, and it was with much regret the news received that day recorded the death of another fine member in the person of Jack McMahon, and Brother Egbert proposed a vote of sympathy be conveyed from the meeting to the bereaved relatives. The motion was carried in silence. With regard to the centenary celebrations held during the year, Brother Egbert stated that Wellington had given a lead to New Zealand, and subsequent to the local gatherings, similar functions had been held throughout the Dominion, but none he thought could have been more successful than our own. Speaking to the motion, Mr. J. A. Scott congratulated the members on the successes achieved, and said he hoped that more members would in future attend the meetings of the Catholic Debating Union. Mr. L. Sievers stated that he considered that the good work being done deserved more support from old boys and thought it was hard to believe so few were on the roll. He thought the members’ subscriptions should be more than one shilling per year as one of the chief difficulties the executive appeared to labor under was lack of finance, without which no organisation could hope to flourish. Mr. M. O’Kane stated he was pleased to see that the association was able to produce such a good report and balance sheet as that laid before the meeting. On being put to the meeting the motion was carried. His Grace Archbishop Redwood and his Grace Archbishop O’Shea are patrons; Rev. Father Hurley, 5.M.,, Adm., spiritual director Rev.
