(From our own corresponded.) October 8. Rev. Father (Chaplain) Murphy, N.Z.E.F., has entered upon his duties at Featherston Camp. The Marist Brothers teaching at Greymouth and Timaru will be present at the diocesan celebrations in honor of their institute on Sunday and Monday next at Christchurch. Rev. Father Galerne, S.M., at St. Mary's on Sunday morning addressed the congregation on devotion to the Holy Rosary and its effect in combating the three great evils of the present day—the love of the world and its riches, sensuality, and unbelief. A social organised by the Misses O'Connor in aid of St. Mary's Carnival produce stall was held at Papanui on Thursday evening. The hall was crowded, and, under the able direction of Messrs. E. Daly and J. Kaveney, a pleasurable evening resulted. The promoters wish to thank those who contributed towards the evening's entertainment. Rev. Father Galerne, S.M., has, for the purpose of visiting the sick and attending generally to the spiritual needs of parishioners, been allotted that position of St. Mary's parish formerly attended to by Very Rev. Dean Regnault. The Dean will thus be able to devote his time and energy to the administration and organisation of the parish. At St. Mary's Church on Sunday evening last Very Rev. Dean Regnault, S.M., preached a special sermon on "The Significance of the Day" as a day of National prayer. Mesdames B. B. Wood and Ward desire to thank the Raphael Concert Company, for the entertainment given on Tuesday evening last;. in aid of \ the projected carnival. Very Rev. Dean Regnault and his assistant priests appreciate very highly ' the - generosity of this talented company for the generous assistance given the undertaking. -.->■ :%>._■;; There will be a Mass of Thanksgiving at the Cathedral on Sunday morning next at 8 o'clock in commemoration of the centenary of the foundation of the Marist Brothers, at which - the men of the parish, past and present pupils of the Brothers' school,, members of the raternity of the Blessed Sacrament, Hibernian Society, and Catholic Club will approach the Holy Table. • A euchre party and social to further the interests of the Hibernian queen (Miss C. O'Connor) took place on Wednesday last in the Hibernian Hall. There was a splendid attendance Cathedral, St. Mary's, Addington, Halswell, being well represented, and the energetic committee deserve to be congratulated on the evening's enjoyment arranged. Prizes for the euchre were won by Miss K. McCormick and Mr. F. Smith; the consolation prizes going to Miss McCarthy and Mr. T. O'Rourke. A garden party in aid of the schools' queen was held in St. Mary's Convent grounds on last Saturday afternoon. The attendance exceeded all expectations. Various forms of amusement, including motor rides, were provided, whilst the wares of the different stalls received the attention of visitors. The stalls \ were prettily decorated, and Miss Hay ward's candidature for honors must have been considerably advanced. The committee sincerely thank the Sisters of Mercy for the use of the grounds and the assistance given. - The net-ball matches were resumed on the 28th ult., after the September vacation, when the Sacred Heart Girls' College A played the Girls' High School A and defeated that team by 16 points to 2. The same day the Sacred Heart Girls' College B team played a match with the Technical College A when the score was 8 all. On Friday, October 5, the Sacred Heart Girls' College A team defeated St. Margaret's B by 29 points to 14, and the St. Margaret's A team defeated Sacred Heart Girls' College B by 40 points to St. Patrick's branch, No. 82, H.A.C.B. Society held its quarterly meeting on Monday evening, September 24. There was a splendid attendance of members, which was very gratifying to the presiding officer (Bro. Jacques) and his fellow-officers. Rev. Father Long (chaplain) expressed his delight at seeing such a fine meeting, and congratulated the branch on its flourishing state, and the fine spirit existing amongst its members. Sick pay amounting to £9 3s 4d was passed for payment, making a total for the quarter of £79 10s. One member was initiated and three candidates nominated for membership. The following accounts were passed for payment—M.A. fees, £47 10s; rent of meeting room, £8 15s; U.F.S. Benevolent Association, £1 0s sd; U.F.S. Dispensary, £2B listed; — total, £BO 16s lid. P.P. Bro. O'Rourke replaces Bro. Joyce as guardian, the latter being unable to attend regularly. The branch appreciates the action of Bro. O'Rourke, who sets an example of devotion that should be emulated by younger members. v -' On last Sunday evening the Rev. Father Sullivan, C.SS.R., commenced a week's retreat for the Cathedral Archconfraternity of the Blessed Sacrament, and exhorted the members to offer up any sacrifices they might have to make during its progress to Almighty God for the; peace of nations. _v f 'Jesus of Nazareth, Who went about doing good" was the theme of his beautiful discourse, which was listened to ' with wrapt attention by the crowded congregation: Many of those present were non-Catholics.
