Gisborne
(From our own correspondent.) July 3. At both Masses on Sunday Rev. Father Lane made an earnest appeal on behalf of the Catholic Federation, urging every man, woman, and child to enrol. Rev. Father Furlong, of Devenport, was celebrant of the early Mass. The social evening arranged by the Children of Mary, assisted by the Hibernians and others, in aid of the Altar Society, was such a pronounced success that it was decided to secure a larger hall for the next of the series. The Scottish Hall was therefore engaged for the second social, which is to be held this (Tuesday) evening.
The monthly meeting of the Catholic Federation executive committee w-as held on Sunday last after devotions. The president (Rev. Father Lane) presided, and a fair number of members were present. Correspondence was received from the diocesan secretary re the appointment of a Gisborne delegate to the annual meeting of the diocesan council in Auckland. It was decided to ask the Rev. Father O’Malley to act as delegate for Gisborne. Mr. T. Orr (secretary) reported that as the result of an active canvass of the Gisborne parish over 200 new members had been enrolled since the previous meeting. The rev. president congratulated the lady members on their zeal in this important matter. The treasurer (Mr. Hudson) read the financial statement for the month, and it was announced that the monthly penny collection, totalling £lO 16s, had been remitted to the* Catholic Field Service Fund of the Federation.
