BISHOP TO COLLEGE WOMEN.
“ The perfection of the human mind is found not in knowledge alone but also in faith, in hope, in love, and in religion.” So declared Bishop McDonnell in a brief address to the students of St. Joseph’s College for Women, Brooklyn, who visited him recently at his residence to express their congratulations upon the completion of twenty-five years of holy and beneficent activity as Bishop of Brooklyn. Our purpose in establishing your college,” continued the Bishop, “ as to provide an institution of learning in which you might secure a proper superstructure lor your foundation of Catholic education. St. Joseph’s College, therefore, is intended to be an •institution in which your intellect and will, already attuned to truth and goodness, may pursue the advanced secular studies guided by the principles of Christian faith and motived by the precepts of Christian morality. “ Thus prepared and fortified you may afterwards take your places in the ranks of those noble Christian women of to-day, who are combating the malign influences of avarice, greed, and selfishness in the modern world; who are striving to preserve spiritual aims in the midst of degrading paganism and debasing materialism ; who are contributing to social betterment, in the truest sense of the ter pi, because they are working for individual perfection according to the standard of Jesus Christ.”
