OBITUARY

MR. THOMAS EDWARD SHAW, P AERO A. The death is recorded of Mr. Thomas Edward! Shaw, who passed away at his home, Puke road,. Paeroa, on May 2. The deceased was born in Dalkut, Dublin, and was 74 years of age. He left Ireland on January 4, 1865, arriving in Auckland with a young, wife in the Matoaka, a wooden sailing vessel. After a few months he settled in Waiuku on land granted him by the Provincial Government. Eventually he removed to Thames, where he was associated with many mining ventures in Thames and Waitakuri, and was at one time connected with the celebrated Caledonian Mines. He was Foreman of Works in Ohinemuri when that body was under the control of the Thames County, and Inspector of Works on the Thames-Paeroa and the Paeroa-Te Aroha railway line. He also filled the same position on the Paeroa-Waihi line, and was a devoted friend of the late Mr. James Mackay, they being jointly responsible for the suppression of many Native disturbances. The late Mr. Shaw filled several other important positions, including the secretaryship of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club for several years after its initiation. He was one of the first secretaries of the Paeroa School Committee, and was laterly inspector for the Ohinemuri County Council on several bridges then under construction. The family of deceased now mourning their loss are Mrs. Hill (Awaiti), Mrs. P. Brennan (Paeroa), Miss N. Shaw (High School teacher, Paeroa), Miss Amy Shaw, Mr. E. Shaw (county engineer), Mr. Eugene Shaw (now oh active service in Egypt). A third son, Mr. Fred Shaw, answered the call to the Ist Contingent for the Boer war. He returned to New Zealand arid left again with the 9th, and was afterwards selected for the Coronation Contingent to England, and died soon after his return to the Dominion. He was buried with military honors in the Paeroa Cemetery. A few months ago another son, Gerald, was killed in action in France.. Harold; a grandson, left with the Hauraki Regiment in the early stages of the war, and is now fighting in the trenches in France, and Edward, another

grandson, enlisted a few months ago for home service. The remains were interred in the Paeroa Cemetery on Friday week last, the Right Rev. Mgr. Hackett officiating. R.I.P.
