CATHEDRAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE, CHRISTCHUROH.

* _ SECOND ANNUAL REPORT AND BALANCE SHEET. e • In presenting its balance sheet, the committee desire to point out, that although there is a credit balance of £34 Os 4d shown, there still remains a liability of £IOO owing to the bank, so that really there is a debit balance of £65 19s Bd. The committee were faced with heavy expenditure in connection with the Brothers' house which has been thoroughly overhauled, painted, papered, etc., and electric light installed and partly refurnished. This work was undertaken at the beginning of the year at an actual expenditure of £298 18s 6d. The current expenses have also increased, an additional Brother having been placed on the staff. The very necessary work of cleaning and sweeping both schools has been well attended to by a reliable cleaning company, and this work does not" fall on the children as formerly. Many useful additions have been made in both schools, school furniture supplied, and the buildings kept in good repair. In order to meet the additional expenditure during the year, the committee organised a garden party, and two parish socials which proved very successful, the sum of £l4l 8s 6d being realised. The committee are indebted to the members of the Christchurch Catholic Club for promoting a concert in aid of the funds, which realised £l4. The penny collections have been very satisfactory, the result for the year being £322 5s lid. To meet the balance still owing, a very successful garden party was held on January 20, 1917, which realised £202 6s Id. The committee are very grateful to the ladies for valued assistance at all times, and for the patronage extended. The committee are also indebted to the members of the H.A.C.B. Society (St. Matthew's and St. Patrick's branches) for the good work done by them and for the free use of their chairs, tables, etc., whenever required. His Lordship the Bishop has taken a very deep interest in the work of the committee ever since his consecration, being chairman of the committee, and trustee. His great experience in administrative and school work is invaluable, and the members are deeply indebted to his Lordship for the whole-hearted support he has accorded them. It having been brought under the notice of his Lordship by the Committee, that the good Sisters teaching at St. Joseph's Parish (School were receiving practically little or no school fees from the children, his Lordship has decided that the Sisters shall receive £l5O per year in order to meet the deficiency. As the present school buildings are very unsuitable, especially the parish girls' school, plans have been prepared for two new schools, which, when erected, will be in every way the most up to date and compact in the Dominion. Owing, however, to the unsettled state of the labor market and greatly enhanced cost of material, caused by the war, it is. thought advisable to hold this work over for the present. Whilst thanking all who have supported the committee in their various undertakings, it is hoped that the same help and encouragement will be forthcoming during the present year. The committee consists of the following: —His Lordship Bishop Brodie (chairman), the Rev. Brother Director of the Marist Brothers' School, Messrs .T. Cahill, W. Rodgers, M. Grimes, J. Power, J. Jacques, M. Garty, W. P. Daly, F. O'Connell, J. Cummings, J. Cunningham, J. J. O'Gorman, P. J. Amodeo (at present in camp), and P. A. O'Connell (secretary and treasurer). Works committee— W. Rodgers, T. Cahill, M. Grimes, and the secretary.
