We have received a copy of Digest of Selected English and New Zealand Supreme Court Decisions on the Criminal and Licensing Laws, arranged by Constable L. Skinner, formerly of Dunedin and now of Napier, and well and favorably known to .many of our readers. The work covers 73 pages, and deals with about 500 cases. The book is intended for the use of the Police Force, to whom it should be a boon. For some 20 years past it has been the practice to insert in the 1 dice Gazette such legal decisions as were from time to time given knowledge of which would be useful to the members of the Police Force. Constable Skinner s Digest includes all the Appeal and Supreme Court cases that have been in th e Police Gazette, and he so arranges them as to meet the convenience of the busy sub-inspector or senior sergeant, who in the conduct of cases is opposed day after day in the Police Court to experienced and trained solicitors. _ So far as our knowledge goes, Constable Skinner’s book appears to have the merits of a good law book; its contents, taken from the Police Gazette, are accurate and up to date, and Constable Skinner’s special portion of the work, which includes the index, table of cases, and alphabetical arrangement of matter under headings and sub-headings, should constitute a good guide to a busy man through a large mass of useful matter which would otherwise remain undiscovered in the pages of 20 years’ Pol ire Gazettes. The Solictor-General, Mr. J. W. Salmond, Iv.C., LL.B., to whom the Digest was submitted by Commissioner Cullen, reports that the work seems to have been well and carefully done. We have received the annual report of the Australian Catholic Truth Society, covering the period November 1, 1915, to October 31, 1916. We have also received from the C.T.S. the following publications: halth Found on the Battlefield, a true war story, by Father Stanislaus M. Hogan, O.P. : St. Elizabeth of linn gang, Patroness of the Poor, by Thomas B. Reilly; J fedicallg I nfit and Other Stories; by Miriam Agatha; Ihe Church and the Citizen, by Rev. Charles, F. Ronayne, 0.C.C., D.D., M.A., B.Sc.
