The occasional sermon is to be preached by the Rev. Father Herbert. S.M., Timaru. Information has recently been received that Chap-lain-Captain Richards, formerly pastor of Hawarden, who joined the N.Z. Main Expeditionary Forces in ®Sypf> was through the Gallipoli campaign, and is now on the French war front, has been awarded the Military Cross. ' ; r The Rev. Father Guinahe, of Masterton, who is at present a guest of his Lordship the Bishop at the episcopal residence, preached a very instructive discourse in the Cathedral at Vespers on Sunday evening on the ‘lnfinite Mercy of God,’ and wards gave Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The Rev. bather O’Hare and the parishioners connected with the Sacred Heart Church, Addington, are energetically promoting a ‘ Garden Party ’' for Saturday, February 17, in aid of the local Catholic school fund. The committee have secured the use of the Metropolitan Trotting Club grorfnds, situated in the vicinity, for the purposes of the fete, \Oiich promises to attract a large gathering. The half-yearly general meeting of the Christchurch Diocesan Council of the N.Z. Catholic Federation was opened in the Hibernian Hall on last Tuesday evening. His Lordship the Bishop president of the Diocesan Executive Committee presided. After the routine business was transacted, the Very Rev. Dean Hyland (Rangiora) gave an address on the Popes and peace. A report of the proceedings will appear in the Tablet next week. The ordinary meeting of the St. Patrick’s branch (No. 82) H.A.C.B. Society was held in the Hibernian Hall on Monday evening, January 15. The president (Bro. J. Flannelly) was in the chair, and there was a full attendance -of officers and a good number of members. An amount of £6 10s was passed for payment to sick brothers. Dr. Ardagh notified the branch that owing to the illness of Dr. Inglis, his (Dr. Ardagh’s) practice would in future be carried on by Dr. Temple. Brothers who were on Dr. Inglis’ list are in the meantime transferred to Dr. Marks’. Bro. J. Murphy (Wellington South), who attended the meeting, was welcomed by the president, and Bro. Murphy suitably replied. Information was asked in reference to the hospital bed scheme. Members, who have all been supplied with a circular in this 'connection, would do well to become conversant with the rules and regulations contained, therein, so that should the emergency arise they will have no difficulty in availing themselves of what to many has been a great boon: The clearance of one brother from the Timaru branch was accepted. Accounts amounting to £56 12s 4d were passed for payment, and the quarterly balance sheet and auditors’ report were received and adopted. At 9 p.m., as

arranged at ; the previous: meeting", ■ the : adjourned halfyearly meeting was opened. Some very important discussions took place on the business; sheet for the district annual meeting and other -matters. The speeches were sound,- fluent, and earnest—given with a fine spirit, and only the lateness of the hour precluded finality being reached. Unfinished business incidental to the half-yearly meeting will be resumed at the next branch meeting.
