Advantage was taken of the occasion to present pocket wallets to Privates J. Stapleton, J. Sweeney, L. Graham, and J. Tarleton, who were on final leave, prior to their departure for the front. Father Lockington, S.J., preached an eloquent sermon to a very large congregation on the present-day need of good, strong, independent Catholic

men who-;could become fearless leaders of their fellow, men. He pointed out that the battle to be fought by our- Catholic men to-day'was more exacting and' required finer -, qualities than the battles fought by the martyrs of old, as -it .was : a -comparatively; easy <" thing, - assisted by Divine grace, to make the supreme sacrifice 1 for a. cause ; which stood near to the ; heart, while it > is : an extremely : difficult thing, 1 demanding the finest virtues, to make a consistent stand against the- spirit of lindifferehtism and carelessness which : are taught by the world to-day. He illustrated his subject by ; telling examples drawn from the history of past times and from the ; present war. ; - ' - - On Tuesday, .January 9, St. Dominic's Priory, Dunedin, was the scene of a solemn and - impressive ceremony, when ; three young ladies pronounced their final vows, while three aspirants to the * religious state were clothed in the white habit of'St. Dominic. The newly professed were —Sister " Mary Petronilla Sloane, Sister Mary Charles Borromeo Venning, and Sister Mary Celestine Radford. The postulants received; were Miss Margaret Croker, Limerick, Ireland (in religion, Sister Mary Etlma) • Miss Gertrude Spillane, Limerick (in religion, Sister Mary Lawrence) ; and Miss May Carrick; Wellington (in religion, Sister Mary John Evangelist). The ceremony was performed bv his Lordship Bishop Verdon, assisted by Rev. Fathers Kavanagh and A. Venning, S.M., Wellington, while Very Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., and Rev.
