Diocesan News

ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGTON (From our own correspondent.) December 9. The handsome sum of <£ls7 10s Id has been remitted by the Napier Parish Committee of the Catholic Federation as a result of a concert held at Napier for the Catholic field service fund. This constitutes a record, and the Napier committee is to be congratulated on the result of its efforts for such a laudable object. The Boxing Day picnic in aid of the Catholic education fund, which is to take place at Karori Park, promises to be most successful. Arrangements have been made with the Tramway authorities to run a tenminutes’ service and to provide special cars for the conveyance of the children from Island Bay, Brooklyn, Newtown, Kilbirnie, and the city.

The death of Mr. Martin O’Malley, of the Thorndon parish, and an officer of the Government Life Insurance Department, occurred at the residence of his father (Mr. Michael O’Malley), Lumsden, Southland, on the 18th ult. The deceased, who was of a retiring disposition, was a member of the Hibernian Society (St. Patrick’s branch), and was a popular young man. He was married about a year ago. He some months ago took ill, and developed a malignant malady from which he never recovered. The Rev. Father Buckley attended him in his last illness and officiated at the funeral. To his young widow and relatives is extended the sincerest sympathy of a large circle of friends.— R.I.P.

’ I very much regret to record the death of Mr. Geo. T. Foote, who met his death in a tragic manner at Featherston Military Camp last week through an explosion. The deceased, who was a staunch Catholic, was a member of St. Anne’s Choir, and also a member of St. Aloysius’ branch of the Hibernian Society, and St. Anne’s Club. He was very popular, and his early and tragic death will be deplored by a large circle of friends. The interment took place this morning, Requiem Mass being celebrated at St. Anne’s. Representatives from the various societies with which he was connected were present, and the officers of the H.A.C.B. Society acted as pall-bearers. A widow and two children are left to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father.—R.l.P.

In an appreciation of the late Mr. Martin Kennedy in the Freeman’s Journal, Mr. J. T. Donovan, M.P., says:—‘lt was chiefly through his wonderful organising ability and his untiring energy that the missions of Mr. Devlin, Mr. Hazelton, Mr. William Archer Redmond, and myself in New Zealand were so strikingly successful. His one strong note of advice to his fellow-countrymen was to maintain unity of aim and action, being convinced that, with the moral and practical support of the Irish race in every part of the world, national self-government, although “baffled oft,” would eventually be won. He expressed to me that his one desire beyond all other earthly ambitions was to live to see the Irish Parliament open and his fellowcountrymen enjoying the fruits and blessings of all their struggles and sacrifices in the shape of free institutions. He has not- been spared to realise this desire, but his countrymen in Ireland and New Zealand are proud and grateful for all his labor and devotion to the interest of his motherland. To his wife, who also hails from Tipperary, and his family I tender on behalf of my" colleagues and myself an expression of our sincere sympathy.’

' One of the most successful bazaars held in the city for some time is in progress at St. Anne’s Hall, Newtownthe Allies’ Bazaar. It is being held to help to liquidate the debt on St. Francis’ Catholic Church, Island Bay. The bazaar was opened on last Monday night ■by his Grace Archbishop Redwood, who remarked on the number of very artistic and useful goods which loaded the various stalls. The bazaar

# ' ,1 establishes something of a record in undertakings of the kind, inasmuch as from first to last it has been prepared in a month, no ..word of it having been heard of before the first week of November, so that all the various articles adorning the stalls have been made or got together in the last month. This reflects great credit on the stallholders and management. The ‘ commickers,’ excellent pierrots, provide abundant music and laughter each night with their clever songs and witty asides. The bazaar is open for two nights more, and will close to-night. The whole of the arrangements are in the hands of a strong and energetic committee of ladies and gentlemen, under the direction of the Rev. Father Kimbell, S.M. The following are the names of the stalls and stallholders: Belgium Mrs. Evatt, Mrs. W. H. Evatt, and Miss Evatt, assisted by Misses M. Evatt, C. O’Regan, M. Redican, M. and K. Wylie.
