DISTRESS IN IRELAND

RIGHT REV-. M. VERDON, D.D. (Bishop of Duucdiu), Treasurer.

' He hath distributed; he hath given to the poor; his justice remaineth for ever' (Ecclesiasticus).

The chance of dispensing friendly aid to the poor of Dublin has been offered to the readers of the Tablet, and understanding the good of it, the glory of it, and the everlasting reward of it, they have eagerly grasped the opportunity.

But much remains to be done. Advices, private and public, lay stress on the amount of misery prevailing in Dublin. Thousands have daily to be fed, clothed, and housed for the winter, and that in a city to a large extent in ruins.

Happily for the cause of real charity, most of the relief work is being done by the members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The offerings now made—let us see to it they are generous—they will distribute in the wisdom of.secret almsgiving, and so hasten the coming of the day when the workmen of the city may arise from their temporary distress and become once more their own bread-winners.
