One of the most successful concerts ever given in St. Patrick's College took place on Monday, November 6. The large assembly hall of the college was tilled to overflowing by a most enthusiastic and appreciative audience of friends of the school. The editor of the School Magazine, who had organised the concert, had secured the assistance of the best musical talent of Wellington, and from first to last the concert was an unqualified success. Among those who contributed items were Miss Agnes Segrief, who sang "Soul of mine,' and, as an encore, ■ Coming home,' and again ; Annie Laurie.' Mrs. R. d'Ath (Otaki) sang 'The Rosary.' and, as an encore, 'Waiata Pot.' Mr. Hamilton Hodges contributed as his first item 'lf I were King of Ireland.' and later on, in conjunction with Miss Eileen Driscoll. two duets, 'Barcarolle' (Tales of Hoffman) and Still as the night.' Miss Eileen Dnscoll's fine voice was heard to great advantage in ' She wandered down the mountain side.' Mr. Haydn Beck, the noted violinist, charmed the audience with his finished rendering of -Caprice Viennois.' ' llumoureske,' and • Carnaval Russe.' Mr. Kevin Dillon created great enthusiasm with his recitation of 'Who casts a slur?' and later caused great amusement with his musical monologues. Master Winston McCarthy,- 'the youthful Harry Lauder,' elicited great applause from the younger part of the audience with his items. The surprise of the evening, however, from the visitors' point of view, was the magnificent singing of an artist, who had so far not appeared on any platform in Wellington— Rev. Father Ryan, S.M.. of the college staff. Gifted with a splendid tenor voice of great power, and endowed with the temperament of an artist. Father Ryan adds to these a perfect technique, all the more remarkable from the fact that lie is. in musical matters, a self-taught man. His contributions included ' How many hired servants," ' Boatsong,' ' Indian squaw song,' 'Chanson do Florian,' and ' Obstination.' He was recalled again and again, the large audience expressing their delight in unmistakable fashion. At the end of the concert Rev. Father Gondringer, S.M., on behalf oi the school, moved a vote of thanks to the performers, who had so readily and graciouslv given their services to make the concert the best that had been given for .many years in St. Patrick's. The boys of the school expressed their appreciation, ill their own manner, by giving three rousing cheers for the performers. The accompanists were Miss Gladys Watkins and Master Cordon O'Moeghan.
