RESIGNATION OF MR. J. A. SCOTT

lii connection with the announcement made elsewhere in this issue as to the retirement of Mr. J. A. Scott from his editorial connection with the N.Z. Tablet, the Directors desire to place on record their very high appreciation of his work and worth, and. their deep and unfeigned regret at the loss of his services. Mr. Scott’s service with the X.Z. Tablet Company has extended over a period of thirteen years, during eight of which he has acted in the capacity of editor of the paper. His editorial work has given an unusual measure of satisfaction, not only to the Directors, but, as we have good reason to know, to the whole body of our subscribers; and welcome and valued commendations of the paper have come to us from competent judges, not. only in New Zealand, but also in Australia, America Rome, and other places far afield. His high educational attainments have enabled him to cover a wide range of subjects, and in matters literary, theological, legal, scientific, and political, Mr. Scott has shown himself equally at home. As a writer, he has wisely adopted a simple and popular though always forcible style, of a character to reach and hold all classes of readers. lie has given ungrudgingly of his time and energy in the cause of Catholic journalism, and it is matter for sincere regret that his health, never robust, has been unequal to the strain. He may carry with him in his retirement the consolation that ho has made the Tablet a paper of which the Catholics of the Dominion are justly proud, and the assured knowledge that his work on behalf of the Church and of his co-religionists is valued and appreciated. It will be a satisfaction, also, to him to know that during his term of office the business side of 1 lie paper has prospered exceedingly. JI is relations wit h the Directors have been at all times of a most cordial and friendly character. Never once have his actions or attitude in matters connected with the paper been called in question, and never once has there been so much as a difference, much less a disagreement, between the Directors and the , editor. Both on personal and official grounds, the Directors deeply regret the severance of the editorial tie, and they hope that it will still be possible to retain for Mr. Scott some literary connection with the paper which ho has served so faithfully and so well. James Coffey, , Secretary to the Directors. November 8, 1916.
