■ . (Prom our own correspondent.) October 27. At a meeting of the Patriotic Society on Friday the sum of £SO was voted to the Field Service Fund. The Devotion of the Forty Hours will commence on Sunday next, and will be brought to a close on Tuesday morning. The St. Vincent de Paul Society held another of its most successful series of euchre parties and socials in the Empire Hall last evening, there being a very large attendance. Mrs. Mulrooney was successful in securing the ladies’ prize, having won every game, while the consolation prize was won by Miss Robertson, The gentleman’s prize was carried off by Mr. Maloney, the consolation prize going to Mr. Vott. Misses Butler and Brophy, who were largely responsible for the success of the function, deserve great credit for the excellent manner in which it was carried out. Wanganui (From our own correspondent.) October 20. Rev. Father Dignan, temporarily working at St. Mary’s, has been transferred to Nelson. During the short time the Rev. Father was here he made himself \ ery popular amongst his parishioners, all of whom regret his departure. The Marist Brothers of Wanganui have received news from Sydney of the death of Brother Matthew, who for many years was attached to the staff of their school in Wicksteed street. Some three years ago he left Wanganui owing to failing health. It was thought by his superiors that a change would prove beneficial, so he was transferred to Napier, but to no purpose, for the chronic illness from which he suffered reduced his vitality so much that he was obliged to relinquish school work completely. He was then retired to the head house of the Order in Sydney, where he passed away on October 16. At 9 o’clock to-day a Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s for the deceased, at which all the boys whom he taught attended in large numbers.—R.l.P.
