DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

A Requiem High Mass was celebrated at 7 o’clock on Monday morning for the repose of the souls of the Catholic soldiers who have died during the war. The Rev. Father O’Reilly, of Port Chalmers, has been appointed a chaplain to the Expeditionary Forces, and is expected to leave on the hospital ship Marama in a couple of weeks. The ladies of the St. Vincent de Paul Society have been asked to take a stall at the street collection for the St. John Ambulance Association on Friday, 20th inst. The ladies will be thankful to receive gifts from their friends for this worthy object. Just as we go to press a private wire has come through announcing the death of Lieutenant Joseph Atwill, who left with the 14th Reinforcements. Lieutenant Atwill took a leading part in all Catholic movements in Dunedin, and was a prominent member of the Young Men’s Clubs. Much sorrow was experienced by the congregation attending St. Joseph’s Cathedral on last Sunday, when it became known that at least four* of its members were amongst the list of those killed in the recent fighting in France.—Sergeant Brian Vernon Dillon, Trooper Francis Patrick Dagg, Private Reginald Alf Ward, Private Stewart. It was announced at all the Masses on last Sunday that donations would be received before the church on. next Sunday for the Irish relief fund. Reference was made to the magnificent response that was being made throughout New Zealand to the appeal opened a couple of weeks ago in the Tablet, as indicative of the deep fellow-feeling and true charitable spirit which existed in the .hearts of the people.

Mrs. Jackson desires to thank the various donors of parcels to Father O’Neill’s box, which was dispatched by the Willochra. Altogether there were 1280 parcels, the various school children supplying a large number. Parcels were also received from the following country residents— Cuming (Artherton), H. O’Malley (Lumsden), H. Robins (Methven), Miss Mulholland (collection, Ranfurly), Mrs. Ginivan (parishioners, Balfour), Mrs. Scheuffer (collection, Waikaia). Parcels were also donated from the Dominican Convent (Dunedin) and Sisters of Mercy (Gore).
