DISTRESS IN IRELAND

RIGHT REV. M. VERDON, D.D. (Bishop of Dunedin), Treasurer.

THE ELOQUENT TESTIMONY OF A NEW ZEALANDER (REV. FATHER LOCKINGTON, S.J,) TO THE FAITH AND CHARACTER OF THE DUBLIN MOTHERS, ON WHOSE BEHALF WE ARE-APPEALING FOR HELP:— v IRISH MOTHERS. Oh, those Irish mothers! I see in memory well-remembered forms passing along those narrow streets, some bent and old, some at the dawn of life. As I look, gentle-eyed women pass before me, with faces of dulled ivory, meshed and seamed by lines cut by the chisel of time, and of a beauty not of this earth women whose toil-worn hands that clasp the old brown rosary, are eloquent of strength to seize and lift to good all souls they meet : women whose lips are moulded to lines of peace by years of unending prayer over sleeping babes ; women upon whose brows eternal calmness and resignation sit enthroned, and whose eyes are lit by the light of serene confidence that tells of a heart secure in the friendship of God. Oh, Irish mothers! You know God, and know nothing apart from Him. You understand no failure except failure to love Him. You acknowledge no success that is obtained without Him. You measure the earth with the breadth of vision that comes from the contemplation of eternity! Patient’ with the patience of the martyr, strong with the strength of Christ, the very sight of you lifts men’s thoughts to God, for, oh, Irish mothers, you are the living embodiment of the Spirit of our Faith ! And now these Irish, mothers and their little children, are homeless/ By the river bank they sit in dumb despair, amid the ashes of their homes. Their sorrow and distress and silence appeal to us, and the piteous moan of their starving little ones moves our hearts, though half a world away. Let our strong hand go out to them in sympathy and love. Let our gifts be as a healing balm that will soothe those aching hearts.
