AUCKLAND NEWMAN SOCIETY

The Auckland Newman Society entered on the seventh year of its existence on Sunday, July 2. A meeting was held in St. Benedict’s Hall, a large number of members being in attendance. The president (Rev. Brother Fergus), in welcoming new members, emphasised the fact that the constitutions of the society had been so altered as to allow all Catholics to become members of the society. At this meeting, Mr. G. P. O’Shannassy read the first part of a paper on ‘ The Times of Cardinal Wiseman,’ dealing in detail with the life and work of the brilliant theologian. This paper was concluded by Dr. O’Shannassy at a subsequent meeting held in the Sacred Heart School, Vermont street, on Sunday, July 30, and proved intensely interesting and instructive. At this meeting the Rev. Father Murphy, the society’s chaplain, gave a brief introductory lecture on ‘ Social Science,’ explaining its aims and objects, thus paving the way for a series of lectures on this subject, which ought to be both interesting and enjoyable. The next meeting of. the society will be open to the public, and will take place in the Grafton Hall on Monday, August 28, at 8 p.m., when a lecture on ‘ Social Ideals ’ will be given by the society’s first chaplain, Rev. Father Edge, so well and favorably known in Auckland. The officers for the years 1916-17 are as follows: Patron, Right Rev. H. W. Cleary, D.D. ; president. Rev. Brother Fergus vice-presidents— Brother Benign us (principal of Sacred Heart College), Miss F. V. Jacobsen, M.A., Mr. G. P. O’Shannassy, Ph.D., Mr. J. J. O’Brien chaplain, Rev. Father Murphy (Adm.
