OBITUARY
MR. ALEXANDER McCAUGIIAN, GARSTON. : We regret to record the death .of Mr! * Alexander McCaughan, of Causeway Farm, Garston, which took place on March 16. The late Mr. McCaughan suffered much for some months, but he bore it all. with Christian fortitude. The deceased was born in 1860 at Bally castle. County Antrim, and was - brought up on his father’s farm. He came to New Zealand in 1883, and engaged in- farm work in the district, and then turned his hand to mining. In 1899 he acquired the Garston' Hotel and store, which he carried on successfully until the year-1910, when he turned his attention to farming and stock-breeding .'7:., Deceased,-, with' his brother, Mr. Archie McCaughan, also purchased Greenvale Station, which he . however relinquished shortly before his death. .. Some few years since; the late, Mr. McCaughan built - a fine up-to-date residence on one of his properties . at. Garston. In’ all his undertakings Mr. ; McCaughan . - was favored with good : - fortune.' ; He : was a hard worker himself, practical in his ideas, and - always set a good example to his employees. ' During his !! residence •in Garston deceased took a prominent part in every movement for the good of the place, r tHe was a r member of the school and cemetery committees, and took an active-part in Church matters,'’assisting. very materially in the building of the present Catholic Church in Garston. My. McCaughan ' was married in 1896 to a daughter of Mr. J. O’Shannessy, of Limerick, and it is but right to mention that Mrs. McCaughan was a tower of strength to her husband in all he undertook. Deceased had a large heart. Sympathy and help these were two strong notes in his character — ever his watchwords. To know Alex. McCaughan .(says a local paper) was to respect and to love him. His memory will long be cherished as that of a warm friend and an ’ honorable man in the best sense. Deceased leaves a widow and family : of three sons and one daughter, for whom the deepest sympathy is felt. The funeral took place at Garston on March 18. A very large number of friends journeyed from all parts to pay their respects to the memory of deceased. The remains were interred in the Garston Cemetery, the Rev.
