OUR SCHOOLS

ST- PATRICK’S COLLEGE, WELLINGTON.

.. V The prizes gained -by the scholars of St. Patrick’s College on the jvork don© during the past year were distributed on Tuesday afternoon, December 14, in the presence of his > Grace Archbishop Redwood, S.M., who presided. The proceedings opened with an overture by the college orchestra, the selection * Maritana ’ being rendered in a pleasing manner. The college choir then sang The rebel.’ The prizes were presented by Dr.Kennedy, rector of the college. , Dr. Kennedy thanked one and all for their presence on such an occasion, and said he was specially delighted to see amongst, them . once ; again, their, beloved Archbishop, who was missed so much during »his absence from the Dominion last year. He was also pleased to welcome bask Archbishop O’Shea, who had only recently returned from a visit to America. In referring to the operations of the college, Dr. Kennedy said that earnest and solid work had been done by the boys during the past year. The conditions throughout had been excellent, and the progress most satisfactory. His Grace Redwood expressed his, pleasure in being present once more to distribute the prizes, and his satisfaction with the report of the year’s work. He complimented the boys on the advantage they enjoyed in being able to receive a good education in a Catholic institution. A large number of old pupils of the college had gone to the front and had fought with conspicuous bravery and heroism in defence of the Empire. f Some of them had made the sacrifice of their lives. He was sure the present boys would be inspired by the noble example set them by their predecessors. Several vocal and musical items were afterwards contributed by the college choir and orchestra, the latter being under the conductorship of Mr. H. P.. Clarke, while Master G. O’Meeghan was accompanist. The following was the prize list:—'

MARIST BROTHERS’ SCHOOL, TASMAN « STREET, WELLINGTON. . An enjoyable entertainment was given in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening, December 15, by the pupils of the Marist Brothers’ Tasman Street School. There was a large attendance of pupils, parents, and the general public. Among those present were his Grace Archbishop Redwood, his Grace Archbishop O’Shea, Very Rev. Dean Regnault, S.M., Yen. Archdeacon Devoy, and Rev. Fathers O’Connor and Smyth. The net proceeds of the entertainment will be forwarded Home for the relief of those members of the Marist Brotherhood, numbering between six and seven hundred, who are fighting the nation’s battles. Every item contributed reflected credit on the boys, and • especially on the conductor, Brother Fidelis, who has trained his pupils to a, high pitch of perfection. The effort of

the juvenile voices in the various choruses 'was excellent.- In the boys’ vocal solo carnival competition, Robert Beveridge secured second place, and James Beveridge third place. ; The' school choir took part in ■ various public concerts, and won ' golden opinions from those best qualified to judge. In athletics also the school has been very successful, winning the 6th B football championship, and being second in the 6th A championship. The entertainment began with an overture on the grand organ by Mr. G. O’Meeghan. The chorus, ‘The old brigade,’ by the school choir, was sung in a most pleasing manner, the boys being loudly encored for their efforts. In his rendering of the solo, ‘Lead, kindly light,’ Master Robert Beveridge was heard to great advantage. Master John McLean executed a Highland fling in a finished manner' An excellent item was the semi-chorus, ‘ The last rose of summer,’ by the choir soloists. . The school juniors gave a finished exhibition of wands drill. A ’cello solo by Master Ralston Fitzgerald, entitled ‘ Nocturne,’ was also a pleasing item. The junior scholars were again most successful in an action song entitled ‘Bed-time.’ The character recital, ‘ Wolsey,’ by Master George Ashbridge, was a very clever and pleasing item, and as a mark of appreciation for his effort he was presented with a silver medal by Mr. O’Brien. The second part of the concert was equally entertaining, the choral selections by St. Joseph’s boys’ choir, with organ accompaniments, being among the most pleasing items of the evening. Masters Harry and John McLean were loudly;applauded for the dance ‘Shcaun Triubhas.’ An exceedingly pleasing item was the vocal solo, ‘ Sunshine and rain,’ -by Master Leo. O’Brien. The. part choruses; by the senior classes, Swedish drill by the juniors (trained by Mr. J. Duffy'), the class recitation ‘ Little boy blue? the tableau vivant ‘ The Christian martyr,’ and the chorus ‘Autumn’s golden leaf,’ by the school choir, completed a highly successful and pleasing entertainment.

ST. MARY’S CONVENT HIGH SCHOOL.

PONSONBY.

The annual concert and distribution of certificates took place on December 10, when there was an exceptionally large gathering of the parents and friends of the pupils. The Eight Rev. Dr. Brodie, V.G., in the unavoidable absence of his Lordship Bishop Cleary, presided. An address, which contained a report of the year’s work, was read by Miss Louisa Harris, after which Miss Shanly came forward and read an address to the Right Dr. Brodie, in which were conveyed the congratulations of the pupils on his appointment to the Bishopric of Christchurch, and a gold fountain pen w#s presented to him. The Right Rev. Dr. Brodie, in reply, expressed in feeling terms his long-standing friendship with the Sisters of Mercy, who had prepared him, in years gone by, for his First Communion, and who had directed his early training conjointly with his dear -parents. In later years he had obtained the Sisters for his parish of Waihi, and had noted, with intense gratitude, the marvellous improvement in his parish, from their advent in the district. Then to the Sisters of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Mount Eden, he owed, under God, -his recovery from a most serious illness. Now their pupils'offered him congratulations on the dignity conferred on him by his Holiness the Pope. Never would he forget, he said, this kindness ; and very proud and glad he would be to see any of his young friends when they visited the south. - , : ■ /-The' Mayor of Auckland made a ; pithy speech, in which he -spoke in eulogistic terms of the music, singing, and recitations to which he had just listened, and said ■ that the Sisters were giving the students at this school an all-round - education, suitable for , the women of to-morrow.’ ' ‘ v

, - The musical programme opened with an orchestral item, / Gloria,’ from Mozart’s ‘ Twelfth Mass,’ played in a spirited manner by the Misses . McGruer, Hopkins,

V> '* * 'c ■ - ‘•A-.- Thompson, C. Ryan, M. ; Tristram, K. Harris (violins), N. Kelly ,;/M. McVeagh (pianos), assisted by Messrs. T. Adams (bass), H. Hiscocks (’cello); > A three-part song, ‘ The meeting of the wallers,’' was then ; expressively sung by the senior singing class/ Of the pianoforte items, the,, duo, ‘ Hymn© . triumphale,’ de- j serves special praise, being brilliantly Executed by % Misses A. McGruer and K. Kelly. ‘ Carnival/ by Misses L. Harris and M. Kantfaorpe,-‘ScaVarnouche/ by Misses t). Wilson and C. Ryan, also a quartet by Misses D. Sneddcn, E. Markey, 11. McNaught, and E. O’Brien were also played, in a very fine style, and reflected credit : on the teachers of the several performers. The efforts of the junior singing pupils were greatly admired in their action songs, Snowflakes’ and the-' French doll,’ especially the latter, .-the chorus of which was sung in French. In the monologue, ‘ Our debt of honor,’: Miss K. Kelly pleased the audience greatly,- and Miss Y. McVeagh recited / Boy blue ’ with excellent /taste. - The contributions of the two junior elocutionists— Misses L. Thorpe and ~M. Harris —were highly appre- : elated. The songs, * Girl guides’ and ‘ Red, white, : and blue,’ added much to the patriotic sentiment of the evening’s programme. Two bracketed numbers by the orchestra were also effectively' played. The Spanish gipsy song and dance were charmingly bright and pretty. In the cantata, ‘ Ten virgins,’ the seniorgirls displayed much vocal ability- and dramatic skill. : A noticeable and very pleasing feature of the pro- ■ gramme was the tableau, ‘ Ufiited Kingdom,’ in which; Miss Carrie Bell was Britannia, Miss-Eileen Markey Erin, and Miss R. Stichbury Scotia. Miss Knight is to be congratulated on the satisfactory interpretation of the different .elocutionary items by her pupils. At the conclusion of the concert the-list of certificates was read by Rev.-Father Murphy. No prizes were given, as the pupils had voluntarily relinquished them, and the donations will be forwarded to the Patriotic Committee. The secondary department report from Mr. Gill, a highly satisfactory one, was read, also one from Mr. Algie, teacher of the Latin class,' and the reports on the primary department, from Messrs. Lambourne and McLeod, bore testimony to the ; efficiency which this division of the school had attained. The visitors inspected the work done by the? pupils, consisting of plain and fancy work, pen, water, and oil paintings, kindergarten .work, dressmaking, and exhibits from the cooking class, all taught by the Sisters. • .
