ST. BENEDICT’S CATHOLIC CLUB, AUCKLAND

(From a correspondent.) Some time ago a gathering of club members took place for the purpose of meeting Mr. Leo. O’Malley (president of the club), and offering to him their congratulations and good wishes on the eve of his marriage, and to recognise the auspicious event by making him a presentation, as a mark of the respect and esteem in which he is held by the members. Mr. F. G. J. Temm (vice-president) occupied the chair, and, in making the presentation, referred to the active part Mr. O’Malley had always taken in club affairs. In handing over the presents, which included a very fine and complete shaving set, and pieces of glassware for the future Mrs. O’Malley, he wished the recipients long life and prosperity in their future sphere. Messrs. Foy, Rose, Hanson, Hynes, Earlly, and A. Temm (as representing the junior members of the club) also spoke, conveying their felicitations to Mr. O’Malley. Mr. O’Malley suitably responded, the function concluding with the singing of 1 For he’s a jolly good fellow,’ and cheers for the future Mrs. O’Malley. A general meeting of St. Benedict’s Club took place on the 14th inst., when there was a large attendance of members. Mr. F. G. J. Temm (vice-president) occupied the chair. The secretary (Mr. J. G. Foy) submitted a report on the affairs and progress of the club. After the routine business had been dealt with, Mr. F. G. J. T emm moved the following resolution—- ‘ That this meeting of St. Benedict’s Catholic Club desires to tender its sincerest thanks and warmest appreciation to Mr. J. T. M. Hornsby and the other Members of Parliament, who supported him in his fearless exposure in the Mouse recently of the gratuitous insults that have of late been offered to the Irish people and their descendants in this country, and feels sure that as a result of the sentiments expressed in the New Zealand Parliament these lying, venomous, and un-British cable items will not in the future be given publicity to by the press of this Dominion.’ Mr. G. Hanson seconded the motion, and said that as a majority of the members of the club were either Irish or of Irish extraction, it was fitting that we should recognise Mr. Hornsby's action. Rev. Father Forde supported the resolution, which was carried unanimously. At the conclusion of the ordinary business, the chairman announced that the club desired to pay a tribute to the deputy-custodian (Mr. N. Earlly) in the way of making him a presentation in recognition of the valuable services he had rendered to the club during the past four years. It gave him great pleasure as vice-president of the club and as senior officer, in the absence of the president, to hand Mr. Earlly, on behalf of the club, a very fine prize billiard cue, silver-mounted, and suitably inscribed, together with a very handsome pipe. Rev. Father Forde said he had, as chaplain of the club, to make Mr. Earlly a further presentation, consisting of a very nice set of hair brushes, etc., with his initials inscribed thereon. Father Forde explained that to Mr. Earlly was due in a very great measure any success the club had attained. The secretary and treasurer said that as officers, who had been closely associated with Mr. Earlly, they desired to express lo him their appreciation of his valuable services. Messrs. Lyons, Hanson, and Foreman also spoke. Mr. Earlly thanked the members for all that had been said about him, and expressed the hope that he would still be able to help and further the interests of the club in the future.
