ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGTON

(From our own correspondent.) September 25. The Rev. Father McCarthy, Marist Missioner, preached at St. Anne’s last Sunday evening. Mr. R. P. Smythe, until recently secretary of the*.'s Thorudon parish committee of the Catholic Federation, y and at present in camp at Trentham, has been pro-. : • moted to the rank of sergeant. Mr. M. J. Schaab, of the General Post Office, and a member of the H.A.C.B. Society, has been selected for duty in the Army Post Office, and will leave for Egypt with the next reinforcements. ' The H.A.C.B. Society Council met on Wednesday"4| evening, under the presidency of Bro. J. J. L. Burke, to discuss the new agreement submitted by the British -3 Medical Association. Bros. Burke and Hoskins were appointed delegates to the conference of friendly societies to deal with the matter. Mr. Leo Carroll (of the Government Life Insurance staff, and well known in St. Mary’s parish), was married to Miss Margaret Jones, daughter of Mrs. E. Sullivan, v Dunedin, at St. Mary of the Angels’ Church, on cJ August 18. The Nuptial Mass was celebrated by the J Very Rev. Father O’Connell, S.M. Mr. L. Loftus was .4 groomsman, and Miss Christina Johnson bridesmaid. ds4 Mr. A, Dibley, a member of St. Francis’ Church Si Choir, Island Bay, who has enlisted in the Medical Corps, was entertained by the members of the choir and friends at Mrs. Elliott’s residence. The Rev. f; Father Peoples, S.M., on behalf of those assembled, | presented Mr. Dibley with a wristlet watch as a mark 4 of appreciation of his services. During the evening musical items were contributed by the following: St. Francis’ Choir, Miss Dibley, Mr. Dallow, and Miss ■k O’ Regan. The quarterly meeting of the St. Patrick’s branch of the H.A.C.B. Society took place last Monday, Bro. 4 J. P. McGowan presiding. A large amount of routine : i| business was transacted, and committees were appointed | for the purpose of organising the Boxing Day picnic | and the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. The receipts for the evening totalled £IOO, whilst sick pay, amounting to £7, was passed for payment. A roll- of honor, containing 12 names of members of the branch who,'? are at the front, was placed in the meeting room. -.pi Everything is in order for the opening of the bazaar which the Yen. Archdeacon Devoy and his | energetic committee are organising. Her Excellency Lady Liverpool has graciously consented to perform theJopening ceremony. The lady stallholders are already ( busy, stocking their stalls. An entertainment committee is doing everything possible to make the bazaar an attractive one, and the feature of the entertainments v will be the dancing. The proceeds of the bazaar will

be devoted towards liquidating the debt on the Newtown, Kilbirnie, and Island Bay churches.’ Hastings . (From our own correspondent.) After October 1, and during the summer months the Sunday Masses are ,to be at 7.30, 9, and 10.30 o’clock. On Thursday evening last Rev. Father Hurley, S.M., Adm., delivered a lecture under the*' auspices of the Catholic Federation on ‘ Proportional Representation.’ He was listened to with close attention, and, at the conclusion of the address, which was quite the best heard here on the subject, was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks on the motion of Mr. J. A. Gallagher-, seconded by Mr. F. Pimley. The Rev. Father Hurley preached at Vespers on Sunday, his subject being ‘ The European War.’ He remains in Hastings until the return of Rev. Father Geo. Mahoney, S.M., who is at present in Wellington. Palmerston North (From our own correspondent.) September 25. The Rev. Dr. Kennedy, who spent the week-end in Palmerston North, celebrated the* 9 o’clock Mass on Sunday, and in the evening preached to a large congregation. The local branch of the H.A.C.B. Society held its fortnightly meeting on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance. Bro. Comerford was in the chair. Three candidates were nominated for membership by Bro. T. O’Rielly, who is to be complimented on his success. This brings his total up to six in four weeks. It was decided to hold the" quarterly Communion on the Sunday following the quarterly meeting. After the business of the evening had been disposed of, a friendly game of euchre amongst the members took place, and light refreshments were handed round.
