ARCHDIOCESE OP WELLINGTON (From our own correspondent.) September 4. The confraternity of the Holy Family, attached to St. Gerard’s Church, Hawker street, will begin a retreat on Tuesday next. A retreat for men will be commenced on Tuesday next at St. Joseph’s Church, Buckle street. It will be conducted by the Rev. ' . ; Now that the Saturday is a universal half-holiday; necessitating Friday being the late shopping night, St. Anne’s Men’s Confraternity of the Sacred Heart will meet on the second Sunday of each month, instead of the second Friday, as heretofore. Three old boys of St. Patrick’s College have given their lives for their country in the Dardanelles—namely. Private Kildare Lynch, of Woodville, and Lance-Cor-poral Oscar Lynch and Trooper William Lynch, sons of Mr. Lynch, of Paekakarika. All three are cousins of the Rev. Father Hurley, S.M., Adm., St. Joseph’s, Wellington.— At the Church of the Sacred Heart, Hill street, last Saturday morning. Lieutenant Charles K. Gascoigne, of the Trenthara Regiment (‘Earl of Liverpool’s Own’), eldest son of the late Mr. W. C. Gascoigne, and of Mrs. Gascoigne, Hill street, was married to Miss Jean Watson, third daughter of the late Mr. George G. Watson, of Invercargill. The bride was attended by her sisters, the Misses E. and M. Watson, and the best man was Mr. Kennedy Gascoigne, brother of the bridegroom. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Father Kimbell, S.M., who celebrated Nuptial Mass, assisted by the Very Rev. Dean Regnault, S.M. Owing to the fact of the bridegroom’s family being in mourning, the ceremony was quite private. .Lieutenant Gascoigne leaves shortly with his regiment for the front, Pahiatua A very successful entertainment on behalf of the wounded soldiers’ fund was given by the Pahiatua Convent pupils at the King’s Theatre on the evening of August 30. The audience was large and most appreciative, the youthful performers being loudly applauded and frequently encored (says the Pahiatua Herald). The entertainment possessed considerable merit and reflected much credit on the Sisters, the children giving evidence of careful training. There was brightness and picturesqueness about the performance. The action and character songs, and dancing were good, while the patriotic songs, choruses and tableaux were greatly appreciated. A very enjoyable social was held in the Royal : B Albert Hall on Thursday evening, August 26, in aid || of the parish funds, and, considering the inclemency of B the weather, a fairly large number attended. The H supper provided by Mesdames F. A. Martin, A. G/,J§ Allen, G. Stewart, H. L. Harker, R. J. Pothaxn, and B Misses Martin and D. Corkill was nicely arranged, and: 3 was done full justice to. • After 10 o’clock Mass on Sunday, August 29, a meeting was held in St. Peter’s Church, presided over by Mr, A. D. Lynch, vice-president of the Catholic : Federation, to discuss matters in connection with , liquidating the parish debt. Mr. Lynch, in the course of his address, placed the position clearly before the meeting, and suggested that all Catholics in the district be given small cards to be filled stating how much they would be prepared to give, the amounts to be
