‘ Progress ’ is the note reflected in the Students' Magazine of the Sacred Heart College, Auckland, for the past yearprogress both, as to the doings of the college, and as to the turn-out and contents of the Magazine itself. As to the former, the editorial supplies us with, a concise and interesting summary ; ‘To no year can we look back with greater pleasure than to the one just closed. In no period of the college life was there more perfect harmony among the pupils or greater union between the teachers and the taught; fresh laurels have been won in the examination halls; the laboratory has been thoroughly equipped with apparatus necessary to enable the pupils to grasp readily the various branches of science taught in the secondary schools ; experimental plots have been laid out to which many farmers from the districts round . have paid a visit of inspection in order to improve their store of agricultural knowledge from the results obtained by the pupils’ work; further facilities have been given to pupils for perfecting themselves in cricket, football, handball, and tennis ; and, lastly, thanks to our zealous parish priest, the Very Rev. Father Cahill, and his devoted assistant, the Rev. Father O’Malley, the spiritual wants of the pupils have been assiduously attended to with unfailing regularity in spite of weather conditions and the many difficulties that must often arise in the busy life of a parish priest to interfere with tlre performance of outside functions.’ In the chronicle of the year's activity one notices that the subject, of science in all its branches bulks very largely: and the accounts of the newly-installed telescope, of the laboratory, and of tire course of practical agricultural training, give us an idea, not only of the keen interest displayed by the students in the various scientific subjects but also of the very admirable work that is being accomplished by Brother Benign us in this department. In addition to the usual record of the scholastic, athletic, and sports activities of the college, the Magazine contains also, as a snecimen of the work that is being actually accomplished by the students, a really excellent speech on Daniel O Connell delivered bv -1. P. Kavanagh in the competition for the W. P. llackelt Medal for Oratory. The speech shows careful study and wide knowledge of the subject, admirable arrangement, and highly creditable powers of thought, ami of expression. Another extremely interesting item is the selection of extracts from letters written by Fred. Gleeson, an old boy of the college, who accompanied the N.Z. troops to Samoa. Outside of the purely college items, the Magazine. features a study of the present Pope to whom is accorded the place of honor in an excellent frontispiece, and of whom an interesting biographical sketch is given. The general literary matter comprises an essay on Newman’s Apologia Pro 1 it a Sun bv Miss Callan and Thoughts on a First Reading of the Life and Poems of Francis Thompson ’ by Miss V. Jacobsen, M. A. two exceptionally fine and high-class contributions. Altogether, the Magazine is a very bright, and readable production, and one in regard to which both editors and students have reason to congratulate them' selves. We have also to acknowledge receipt of the following timely and excellent publications of the Australian -Catholic Truth Society ; —Pin* X., by the Bishop of Salford, Benedict XV., by Benedict, C.SS.S.; Rational Education'. A Statement of Principles and, a Comparison of Systems, by P . S. Cleary : The Labor Party and. Secular Education ; How the Catholic Workers of England Solved the Problem, published by the Advocate Press; Cultured Paganism A Critical Study, by Rev. W. J. Tucker, S.
