ST. MARY’S COLLEGE, OAMARU

The . Right Rev. Monsignor Mackay presided at the annual break-up of St. Mary's College and St. Thomas’ Academy on Thursday morning, December 10. In addressing the boys of St. Thomas’, Monsignor Mackay congratulated them on their happy appearance and on the fact that good health had prevailed among them during the entire year. Some, no doubt, would miss their accustomed prizes, but the thought that by giving them up they were providing not luxuries, but necessaries for so many this Christmas season, would more than compensate for the sacrifice they were making. He wished all a happy vacation and a punctual return to school.

During the year- the senior boys attended the Technical woodwork class, where, under Mr. Grigg, very good progress in this useful branch was made. The dancing class,, conducted by Miss Dawson, has not only improved the general deportment of the boys, but has also given opportunity for pleasant and healthful exercise during the winter evenings. Miss NoweJohn’s instruction in cooking were very popular with the girls of St. and should prove most useful to those who benefited by her careful training. Physical drill, as heretofore, has occupied a prominent place in the year’s course, and to it and the exercise afforded by games and gardening may be ascribed much of the development and good health of the boys.
