CHRISTIAN BROTHERS’ SCHOOL, DUNEDIN

• The distribution of prizes at the Christian Brothers’ School took place on Friday morning, December 18. The Very Rev. Father Coffey presided and distributed the prizes. The Rev. Fathers Buckley and Kavanagh were also 'present. - The principal (the Rev. Brother O’Ryan) read the following report: - I have much pleasure in being in a position to report a successful year’s work. The numbers on the roll have been well up to the average, while the attendance, with few exceptions, has been satisfactory. The religious and moral training of the boys is regarded by us as the first and principal of our duties, and it is pleasing to be able to state that on the whole the conduct of the boys justifies the hope that our efforts in this direction have not proved in vain. The establishment of the Sodality of the Apostleship of Prayer at the beginning of the year exercised a salutary influence in the realisation of such a desirable scale of affairs. A good spirit of study pervaded the school during the year, as is evidenced by the success of the various classes in the searching examination to which they were subjected by the Government Inspectors. No other proof of close application to study need be given than to state that 21 boys succeeded in gaining the proficiency certificate. Five hoys were successful in the Public Service Entrance examination. It is with feelings of pleasurable anticipation that Brothers and boys look forward to the completion of the splendid new school now in course of erection in Dowling street. We are confident that a new era of successful effort in the cause of Catholic education in Dunedin will be ushered in on the opening of this most up-to-date educational establishment. We feel deeply grateful" to the priests of the parish, especially to the Very Rev. Father Coffey, for their efforts in this direction, and to the public of Dunedin for their generous contributions to the building fund. In the world of sport our boys ha’ve more than upheld the reputation of the school. In the Schools’ Association ' Football Competition,' the three teams entered by the school carried off the cups in the A and B grades and the banner in C grade. The medals presented to the winners of the five-a-side competitions in the A and B grades were also won by our teams, as was also the cricket banner in the Senior School Com-’ petition. We desire to thank the priests of the parish for their zealous attention to the spiritual needs of the boys. We also desire to thank our kind and generous friends who contributed to the prize fund ; also Miss C. Hughes for, very valuable assistance rendered* to the hoys’ choir during the year. The report having been read, Very Rev. Father Coffey apologised for the absence (owing to illness) of his Lordship the Bishop, and he distributed the prizes to the pupils. After having distributed the prizes, he addressed boys present, and he exhorted all those who had just obtained their proficiency certificates to continue longer at school in order to fit themselves for respectable and remunerative positions in after life.
