Held Over

Owing to extreme pressure on our space, a quantity of late correspondence is unavoidably held over.

The New Secretary of State There is a discrepancy in the terms of the cable message regarding the appointment of the new papal Secretary of State as it appeared in some of our New Zealand papers which makes it a little difficult to be quite certain as to who the appointee really is. The first version of the cable which came under our notice gave Cardinal Ferrato as the Pope’s nominee, and this would obviously be meant to indicate Cardinal Domenico Ferrata, of whose career we gave a brief account. A number of other : papers have given the name as Cardinal Ferraro ;• while quite a number.have nob published any message at all on the subject. So far as we know there is no Cardinal: Ferraro; but there is a Cardinal Ferrari, Archbishop of Milan, and there is just a possibility that it is this prelate whom the cables' intend us- to understand as-having been made Secretary of State. .

A West Coast Grievance

For* some time past rejieated complaints have reached this office regarding serious delay in the delivery of the Tablet in the Kuxnara district. We have communicated with the Chief Postmaster, Dunedin, on the subject; and for the benefit of our Kumara sub-

scribers we append his reply: ‘ I regret that in the absence of information regarding a particular case, enquiry could not be made in the allegation of delay in the delivery of copies of your paper to persons at Kumara. I shall be glad to have enquiries made in any case in which you can furnish the requisite particulars, which should include the postal wrapper. I may say that correspondence for Kumara is sent through the medium of the Christchurch Office.’ We would be glad if any subscriber who fails to receive his paper at the proper time would kindly furnish us with the particulars referred to above, and so enable us to cause a thorough investigation to be made.

* Ihe Cattle of the Boyne ’

Some time ago, as everybody knows, the London Times fell into line with the other dailies and reduced its price to a penny; but the change does not appear to have been accompanied by an increase of accuracy in the printing and make-up of tire paper. In a recent issue Solomon Eagle makes fun of the following misprint in ‘The Thunderer :

‘ The anniversary of the Cattle of the Boyne was celebrated with unusual enthusiasm throughout Canada.’

Regarding this the critic breaks into verse:

If this is what wan penny means, I’d rather Stump up the ancient coin J Than daily find—Och tempora, Och Times ! Bad grammar in my Times And misprints in my Times In ivry other loine, Capped by this worst of typographic crimes ‘ The CATTLE of the Boyne ’ !

At the New Zealand Dinner

At the eighteenth annual New Zealand dinner held recently in London some good stories were told. The following, related by Lord Plunket in proposing the health of the Chairman, is one of the best: ‘I have only one other thing to say. Lord Ranfurly has been found out this evening on the subject of lunatic asylums! I will relate an experience I once had. I once inspected a mental asylum near Christchurch. I was going round, and I had spoken to a number of people when one inmate came forward, and as he came forward the doctor in attendance said to me, “You must not mind, but this person is inclined to be very abusive.” I said I didn’t mind. When he came forward he"said, “Do I understand you are the Governor of New Zealand?’’ I said “Yes.” Then he said, with a very polite bow, “ God help New Zealand !” ’
