AUCKLAND NEWMAN SOCIETY

(By telegraph, from our own correspondent.) June 29. J lie Juno meeting of the Auckland Newman Society was held at St. Patrick’s Schoolroom, on Sunday afternoon last, there being a very largo attendance of members. Brother George, M.A., occupied the chair, and, after the formal business had been disposed of, delivered a most illuminating address on the work and place of the Church in higher education. Brother George gave an interesting account of the foundation of the various universities, and their charters, and he spoke of the Catholic college already affiliated with the Sydney University. lie commended the Newman Society of Victoria for its efficacious efforts in the matter of higher education for Catholics, and expressed the hope that, in the near future, New Zealand would fall into line with Sydney and Melbourne in this matter.

A number of the members present expressed their keen appreciation of Brother George’s address, and a. hearty vote of thanks was accorded him. An interesting discussion was then held on the Bible-in-schools question, and it was unanimously resolved to ask the Prime Minister, the Minister for Education, and each of the Auckland Members to do their utmost from their places in Parliament to oppose the passing of the Referendum Bill, because of its interference with the most sacred rights of conscience and religious freedom. It was announced that a prize of five guineas would be given for the best essay on Newman’s .1 polai/ia. The essay is open to all financial members, except clerics and religious, of the Auckland Newman Society. All papers are to be handed in at. the society’s October meeting. The July meeting will be held at St. Mary’s Convent, Ponsonby, on the 26th, when Father Doyle will give an address on Browning.
