Riverton

The Catholics of the parish of Riverton (says the local paper) are looking forward to an event of considerable interest to their parish priest, the Rev. Father Murphy, who will on June 24 next, celebrate the jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood. The Rev. Father was educated in the Irish College, Paris, where he received his deaconship, and then entered Maynooth College—that great nursery of the Irish priesthood, which has sent its candidates to every part of the known world to spread the faith and keep bright the fires of the nationhood of the venerable Green Isle where he was ordained by the eminent Archbishop of Dublin (Dr. Walsh). On August 15 of that year .he responded to the call from the mission field, and the late Dr. Moran, Bishop of Dunedin, being then at Home with the object of securing priests for his diocese, Father Murphy accompanied him to Dunedin. Ho was first stationed at Invercargill, as curate to the late Very Rev. Father Walsh, of this parish thence lie went to Dunedin, and took charge of the Cathedral parish until appointed by Bishop Verdon to Riverton parish, where he took up his residence some nine years ago. The work that the Rev. Father has accomplished in that time is evidenced in the churches built and the congregations established in this wide and growing parish, crowned by the erection of a fine school and the introduction of the Sisters of Mercy as teachers. That Father Murphy has not. soared himself in his great work is well known to his parishioners; and wo understand that a movement, is on footwhich has been taken up roadily in the different portions of the parish, to suitably recognise the occasicm and perhaps lead to giving him a suitable holiday and relaxation from his arduous duties.
