AUCKLAND NEWMAN SOCIETY

(From a correspondent.)

Despite the unsettled state of the weather, there was a fair attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Auckland Newman Society at St. Patrick’s Schoolroom on Pentecost Sunday. Rev. Brother George, M.A., occupied the chair, and gave a most interesting reading by Maurice Francis Egan on Sir Walter Scott and his works. In the absence of Father. Kirrane, 8.A., who has been transferred to the country, the debate originally intended had to be abandoned. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted. The report showed that six meetings were held duking the year. At these meetings addresses or papers were given by Rev. Father Bartley, M.A., Rev. Brother George,. M.A., and Rev. Father Doyle. The subjects treated were: ‘New light on the secession of the ‘Robert Louis Stevenson’s treatment of Catholics, and Robert Louis Stevenson’s treatment .of Catholics,’ and ‘ The Catholic tendencies of Sir Walter Scott.’ IT he balance sheet shows a creditable balance in the bank. Favorable comments were made at the meeting on the secretary’s efforts to keep the society before the public by publishing the business of each meeting, and in this connection a special tribute of thanks was passed to the Tablet. It was announced that a literary committee had been formed to take in Hand work in connection with the public library. The election of 'officers resulted as follows: — Patron, His Lordship Bishop Cleary ; president, Rev. Brother George, M.A. ; vicepresidents, Hon. J. A. Tole, K.C., Mr. Levien, LL'.B., M.A., Mr. O’Donoghue, 8.A., and Miss Jacobsen, M.A. ; spiritual director, Rev. Father Doyle treasurer and secretary, Mr. Cyril A. Sncddcn ; executive committee Miss Nolan, Messrs. Kalaugher, Wright, ; and Jacobsen. A cordial vote of thanks was passed to the outgoing officers. At the next meeting a discussion is to take place on the Catholic Index.
