DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN
The ceremonies of Holy Week began in St. Joseph’s Cathedral last evening. This (Holy Thursday) evening the sermon on the Blessed Eucharist will be preached by the Very Rev. Mgr. O’Leary (Lawrence). The discourse on* the Passion on Good Friday morning will- be preached by the Rev. Father Coffey (Dunedin), and that on the Seven Dolors on Good Friday evening by the Rev. Father 1 Collins (Mosgiel).. ■ At both the 9 o’clock and the 11 o’clock: Masses at St. Joseph’s Cathedral on Sunday reference was «made to the practice which is becoming widely prevalent of making' Good Friday 'merely a day of recreation and physical enjoyment. .Such, it was pointed: out, is not thfe Catholic idea .of the day, nor the Catholic mode of spending it. . The congregations were exhorted to remember that ; while Good Friday is a day of great spiritual joy, because. on that day was purchased - the redemption of the world, it is a day of: devotion, and not a day of, idle amusement.
