Ellerslie

(From an occasional correspondent.) The new memorial school recently erected in Ellerslie is now complete, and is proving a great acquisition to the parish. Several minor matters with regard to the laying out of the grounds, etc., are not yet complete, but these will all be finished shortly. His Lordship the Right Rev. Dr. Cleary visited this parish last week, for the purpose of holding a Confirmation ceremony. Some 60 children were confirmed in Ellerslie, and a large number the following Sunday in Panmure and Ilowick. A movement is on foot to establish a Catholic Tennis Club here. An inaugural meeting was held last week, and was largely attended. An executive (pro tern), consisting of Mr. F. G. J. Temm (chairman), and Mr. F. J. Pohlen (secretary), was appointed. The project promises to be a great success. The Sisters of the Mission at Ellerslie were very successful with their pupils in connection with the recent Theory of Music examination at the Auckland University College. The following are the results: Intermediate Lydia Pemberton, 65. PrimaryAlwine Temm, 80 (first class) ; Kitty Page, 76; Doris Fergus, 65. Trinity College.—Lower Juniors—M. Lekch, 98 (honors) ; D. Hunt, 70. ' L A very successful mission, conducted by the Rev. Father O’Sullivan, C.SS.R., was recently held in this parish. The first week of the mission was devoted exclusively to Ellerslie, while the second week was divided between the districts of Panmure and Howick. It was very gratifying to witness the devotion with which the congregation attended the different services. The 6 ami. Mass was - *attended by -large numbers during the whole time of the' mission, and this may be taken as an indication of the good effects produced by this time of grace. The missioner , commenced 'hearing confessions early in the mission, and from then, on large numbers of communicants approached the Holy Table daily. During the latter part

of the mission, Father O’Sullivan' spoke- of the advisability of establishing in the parish some sodality by t which the congregation could be assisted to keep up : fervent practices performed .so well during the mission and thanks to the zeal'and enthusiasm' of the missioncr, a strong sodality of the Sacred Heart was ;formed. The various guilds were arranged/ and prefects appointed, and the sodality promises to be a great success, and a lasting monument to the efforts of Father O’Sullivan. At 'the conclusion of the mission the Papal Benediction was bestowed on the faithful.
