CRICKET. i; L y * ' The test match between New Zealand and Australia will be played at Carisbrook on Friday, Saturday, and Monday. Sims at Christchurch on Saturday in the match between the Australian team and Canterbury constitutes a world’s record for an eighth wicket partnership. In 4th grade cricket in Dunedin on Saturday, February 21, Christian Brothers met and defeated High School B by 8 wickets and 16 runs. The following batted well for the winners; Collins (19 not out), Tarleton (12 not out). Temple (13). Moynan (7 for 21) bowled well for the winners. In the 4th grade cricket matches on Saturday, February 21 (writes our Christchurch correspondent), St; Bede’s College, playing against Sydenham, made 175 in their first 'innings (Maclaren 84, Flood 27, and Mullan 27 not out). Sydenham replied with 62 (Purdon 23, Dougal 23, and Young 12). Flood and Maclaren bolwed best for St. Bede’s. In the third grade matches in Dunedin on Saturday, February 21, Christian Brothers met St. Kilda at Culling Park. St. Kilda, batting first, were dismissed for 136 runs (P. McEvoy 45, Condon 30, L. McEvoy 20). Christian Brothers’ replied with 201 for seven wickets (Needham 103 not out, Grinyer 38, O. Eden A 94 for one wicket (Taylor not out 47) ; North Shore 296 (Prime 53, C. Dacre 72, Wallace 51) v. Parnell. The senior cricket championship matches were continued on Saturday in Wellington. North defeated Victoria College by an innings and 56 -runs. North 273, Victoria College 115 and 102. East A beat Old Boys on the first innings by 307 runs to 183. Playing in first grade cricket in Dunedin on Saturday, Dunedin met Grange on the North Ground, and put up a score of 177 in the first innings, to which the latter responded with 128. The Wellington Primary Schools’ biggest swimming event of the year was decided at the Te Aro Baths on Saturday, February 14, and resulted in a win for a Marist bov. v From a purely racing point of view (says the N.Z. Times), perhaps the most exciting race of the

day was the schools’ relay race for the Duthie Cup. Certainly it raised the most enthusiasm. Since its inception, over ten years ago, this cup has been held by the Clyde Quay School, who have successfully resisted all challengers. This year the Thorndon Marist Brothers have a particularly hot team, and trained assiduously with the avowed intention of securing the cup. There were several entries, but from' the start it was perceived that there were but two teams in it—the Clyde and Marist. Foot by foot the lads fought out a bitter and gruelling struggle, which eventually landed the Marist boy a winner by not more than half a length. „ . ’ At the Schoolboys’ Championship Race, held at Blenheim on Friday, February 20, and open to all New Zealand primary schools, the third place was secured by a Marist Brothers’ boy, J. Garrett. OTAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ SPORTS. The Otago Schools Championship Meeting was held on the- Caledonian Grounds, Dunedin, on Saturday afternoon. Schools’ Tug of War.—Christian Brothers, 2. NORTH CANTERBURY PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ SPORTS. Marist Brothers’ School Again Victorious. On Saturday last (writes our Christchurch correspondent) the N.C.P.S.A.A.A. held the annual sports in Lancaster Park. The weather was perfect, and there was a large attendance. Interest centred principally in the athletic events. Last year the Marist Brothers’ School secured the shield for the first time. This year also they have won, with 47 points, the nearest to them being Addington, with 27 points. The feature of the sports was the graded relay race of 700 yards for teams of eight from under 8 years upwards, only one of each age to compete. When half the distance had been covered, the Marists were 15yds behind but by brilliant running by E. Sloane and F. Khouri, and a magnificent finish by J. McCormack, they won by 6yds. The 100yds championship was won by J. McCormack, F. Khouri second, done in record time. The following events were won by boys from the Marist Brothers’ School Long Jump (open). —J.
