OBITUARY
MRS. M. A. BENJAMIN, GREY LYNN. Auckland has lost another of its old identities in the person of Mrs. M. A. Benjamin, of Grey Lynn, widow of Charles C. Benjamin. The deceased lady, who passed away at the age of 79 years, was the eldest daughter of Sergt. Patrick Coyle, of H.M. 58th Regiment, and came out to Australia in 1846. Two years later the Regiment was ordered to Auckland, where the deceased lady had resided ever since her arrival in 1848. When St. Patrick’s old brick Cathedral was just opened, Miss Covlc, as she was then, was confirmed there by "Bishop Pompallier. Subsequently she was married there by the same Bishop, to Mr. Benjamin, who predeceased her in 1898. She was in possession of all her faculties up to the time of her death, and had a wonderful memorv for events which happened since she came here. . She never forgot she was Irish, and was looking forward to the grand time when Home Rule would be proclaimed. During her illness she was attended by Right Rev. Mgr. Gillan, V.G. The interment took place in the Symonds street Cemetery, Rev. Father Forde, of St, Benedict’s, officiating. Mrs. Benjamin’s family consisted of six sons (two of whom predeceased her) and five daughters, and she leaves thirty grandchildren.R.l.P.
