OBITUARY
MRS. WILLIAM (DUBLIN) SMITH, KAIKOURA. One of the foremost of Kaikoura’s pioneers, in the person of Mrs. William (Dublin) Smith, peacefully departed this life on January 23, at the residence of her son Parnell, at Kaikoura. Born in Nelson in 1842, she enjoyed the novel distinction of being one of the first white women born in New Zealand. She and her late husband, who predeceased her by about fifteen years, came to Kaikoura in 1865, and were prominent among the early settlers in the Kaikoura district. She
was a convert to the Catholic Church, coming from a stern "Anglican family, and during her long life she set a splendid example of the thorough convert. The deceased was constantly attended during her last illness by Rev. Father Kelly, and was also visited before her death by each of her eleven children, four daughters and seven sons, the latter being present en masse at the funeral, some of them having travelled long distances to be present for the occasion. She also left over fifty grand-children, and some great-grand-children to mourn their loss'.—R.l.P.
