DIOCESE OF CHRISTCHURCH

(From our own correspondent.) November 24. At the Masses in the Cathedral on Sunday, the Very Rev. Chancellor Price, Adm., sincerely thanked all who had so strenuously assisted, notwithstanding adverse circumstances, in making the Oriental Carnival a success. In the evening at Vespers the Rev. Father Leen, of Rangiora, preached to a large congregation. The officers and members of St. Patrick’s branch of the H.A.C.B. Society desire to acknowledge with thanks the sum of £43 18s, as the result of the recent appeal for the relief of distress in Dublin. Inclusive in the amount is the sum of £2 12s 6d donated by the boys attending the Marist Brothers’ School. The full amount has been forwarded to his Grace Archbishop Walsh, Dublin, to be distributed by the St. Vincent de Paul Society. On last Sunday afternoon, there was a reception into the Cathedral sodality of Children of Mary. Ninetyeight members assembled in the chapel of the Sacred Heart Convent, and the director (Rev. Father O’Boyle), in the occasional address, dealt with the virtues which were characteristic of a Child of —purity, humility, obedience, and charity. Ten candidates were admitted to the sodality, and twelve were received as aspirants. At the conclusion of the ceremony all adjourned to the girls’ schoolroom, where tea was served, followed by a social gathering. The following contributed to the programme: Piano duet, Misses Gwendoline Wilson and Rene Mahon; song, Rev. Father O’Bovle : and other items by Misses Hanna, O’Donnell, and Doreen Egan. Misses Murphy and Reddington were accompanists. Much credit is due to the directress for the present flourishing state of the sodality. After varying success during the first two weeks of the Oriental Carnival in aid of the Cathedral debt liquidation fund, business improved during the last week, the carnival terminating on Saturday night. The promoter, the Very Rev. Chancellor Price, Adm., and committee, are indebted to Mr. Hornibrook, the wellknown physical culturist, for supplementing the programme on several evenings with an exhibition of jiujitsu, wrestling, and a series of tugs-of-war, the Jarrah Timber Company’s team winning the contest in the finals. It is rather early yet to know the actual financial results, but be this great, or below what was hopefully anticipated, it is certain that the stallholders and assistants, and all holding responsible positions were at their allotted posts night after night during a more than ordinarily lengthy season, doing their best to ensure a successful issue. The deplorable labor upheaval, with its depressing effect on business generally, affected the at-

tendance and the spending facilities of the people. Members of the clergy, as usual, aided by their presence and conspicuously by their patronage, the main object of the enterprise. The art union in connection with the carnival was drawn on the closing evening, and a list of the winning, numbers is published in another part of this issue.

Christchurch North November 23. The Rev. Father Taylor, S.M., arrived from Temuka on Wednesday, and left again on Thursday for Hamilton, where the Marist Fathers are to open a mission. . ■ By the last mail from Home the following pupils of St. Mary’s Convent received certificates for shorthand (Pitman’s): Moira Hayward, Evelyn Cousins, and Freda Holmes. A concert in aid of the prize fund will be held in St. Mary’s Schoolroom on Friday evening, December 12, by the children of the parish. A programme, up to the usual.standard of excellence, has been arranged, and patrons are assured of an enjoyable entertainment. Arrangements are in hand to form a boys’ guild in connection with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The members will comprise all boys from 7 to 21 years of age, special interest being taken in boys who have just left school. Mr. P. Nelson has been appointed organiser, and a meeting will be held next Sunday afternoon in the church at 3 o’clock for enrolling members and explaining the objects of the guild.
