OBITUARY

MR. MARTIN SALTER, MANSFORD TOWN. On Thursday, September 11, there passed away at his residence, Mansford Town, Port Chalmers, Mr. Martin Salter, in his sixty-ninth year. Mr. Salter was born in the-County Kilkenny, and was the youngest son of the late Sergeant James Salter (Royal Irish Constabulary). Mr. Salter came out to Victoria when very young, and, with his mother and others of the family, resided in Geelong until he left for Port Chalmers in 1861, and on arrival here went up to the goldfields, "where he stayed for about, two years. He then returned to Victoria, where he married, and left again for Port Chalmers. On arrival he settled in Portobello, and followed the occupation of lightering, which;: at that time was in full.swing. Eventually he removed to Mansford Town, where he continued to reside till the time of his death. A just, upright, and honest man, he had the respect of the whole population; of the Port, where he brought up a family of thirteen,|all of whom are alive, except one son, whom he lost during the late South African war.
